Fluctuating line profile

Hi all would really appreciate a few points of view here...

Firstly I have never had a good dsl line,I have a long line from the exchange so the maximum I could get on my old dsl service was 1meg..bt announce adsl max, better for everyone??I think not!
at first I was getting 1.8 meg..fantastic.now my line connects at 512k during the week & 1.2 for the last 2 weekends & my ping for gaming is horrendous.

things seem to have gone down hill since I had a fault on my line a few weeks ago (telephone went completely)the BT engineer said I had 2 faults! one from the pole to my house & one underground 250ms away so of he trots to the green box & puts me on a new pair(whatever that means) fiddles about up the pole, puts me a new little white box & connection socket in the house,he also said he did a bit of a cheat with the wire to the white box so he didnt have to drill another hole but the phone was working fine & I got my internet back on after being without it for 5 days.

now my speeds are getting worse & to cap it off I'm with fast4 just to add insult to injury.

after conntacting fast4 they say they have chasesd it up with BT & have been informed it is due to the quality of my outside line & is not finacially feasable to fix it so 512k is about the best I can expect :crap:

could someone tell me of any similar situation or tell me if I'm being bulls**ted or if it could be something the engineer did?
what is the best course of action is.

(ps I,m aware of the problems fast4 are having lately but this goes back weeks)

sorry for the long post but I tried to get the whole story in!!!

thanks in adv'

Rich

Hi Rich,

Fast4 aside it sounds like you have a problem with the physical connection between you and the exchange so lets look at that and forget the fact your with a bad isp (this is my opinion).

What router do you have and whats the set up of the internal cabling?

Does your router give any line stats like attenuation and SNR signal to noise readings as these will help to see what the problem is, if you can get them or unsure your ISP could do a check on your line to see what these are. Some one who is trained and experienced from them details can tell you what is wrong.

The cheat the engineer is on about is using the same hole for the new cable as what the old one used which isnt anything to worry about. From what you have said the work the engineer has carried out, the whole of the cabling has been changed between you and the green cab. A new drop wire and a better cable to the main run which goes to the exchange from that cab.

Anyway can waffle on about what is to be looked out for and what was done to sort the problem, now everything is "working" post the stats will give you a better idea of whats wrong.

EDIT:

After contacting fast4 they say they have chased it up with BT & have been informed it is due to the quality of my outside line & is not finacially feasable to fix it so 512k is about the best I can expect :crap:

Rich

Something I missed out, if BT thought it was not worth while working on a fault why would they replace the cabling as far as they did?

So do Fast4 problems sadly.

Can you do a BT speed test and post the results do this from the master socket test socket with all other equipment unplugged, also unplug the sky box from the electricity.

It could be something to do with Fast4 as my line profile dropped last week from 7150 kbps to 6500 kbps after being steady at 7150 kbps for the last 6 months.

I use a dlink 624t router etherneted & the line stats are....

Ite Downstream Upstream Unit
SNR Margin 6 8 dB
Line Attenuation 63 31 dB
Data Rate 1568 448 kbps

this is constant but my bras profile goes from 512 - 1.2 meg sat/sun

firmware is upto date & the connection is no diffrent wether I use direct to main socket (1m cable direct to router/wireless to pc....or....10m cable from socket to router/ethernet)

this is reply I got to ticket today...

Telephone Number 0114******* on Exchange ECCLESFIELD

Your exchange is ADSL enabled, and our initial test on your line indicates that your line should be able to have an ADSL broadband service that provides a line rate up to 512Kbps. However, due to the length of your line, an engineer visit may be required, who will, where possible, supply the broadband service.

Our test also indicates that your line should be able to support a potential ADSL Max broadband line rate of 500Kbps or greater.
This is taken from the BT pre-order checker for your line (http://www.adslchecker.bt.com/pls/adsl/adslchecker.welcome) which suggests that based on the limitations of your line (the length and quality of the line), 500K is about the best you can expect.

I'm afraid BT will not in this circumstance be able to help us with this issue: I have spoken to them about your query and they suggest that upon investigation, this is a problem caused by the cabling from exchange to your home and outside of feasable cost limits to resolve currently.

Kind Regards,
Paul
