Foolproof home VoIP kit recommendations?

OK so I understand the basic principles of VoIP, but I haven't actually played around with it in practice.

However I may soon need to set up a VoIP system in a home setting (note: not mine!). The landline number would be ported to A&A's VoIP service, as the prices are very reasonable and A&A is a trusted and well established provider.

The question is what equipment to use. I had initially thought of using the existing DECT phones with a simple ATA, but I've read about various disadvantages with ATAs- particularly the potential for echo sounds - and the suggestion it's better to go with 'native' VoIP kit.

For VoIP DECT kit, the choice brands seem to be Gigaset, Yealink and Panasonic.

One strong preference (so as to mirror the existing setup) would be for the DECT base unit to incorporate a standalone answerphone (i.e. no reliance on a network voicemail service), ideally with a numeric indicator showing the number of messages and straightforward buttons to play/pause/replay/delete said messages directly from a speaker in the base unit.

From my slightly haphazard research, I've not immediately found something that fits the bill.

I'd also want kit that is reliable, won't 'glitch out' occasionallly, doesn't need regular power cycling and is future (IPv6) proof.

Just wondering if the wise heads here might be able to contribute any sage advice on the matter? Many thanks.

I’ve been using a Linksys ATA with a pair of BT DECT phones for over ten years and haven’t come across any disadvantages or glitches using them in that time.

If you buy any VoIP hardware from A&A they will configure before shipping so literally plug and play.

AVM Fritzbox gives you DECT Base, VoIP (and POTS if you are still using it), built in Answerphone (you can set up more than one, e.g. if you have several VoIP numbers), support for several VoIP providers, call blocking, IPv6 etc.

On top of that you get a decent broadband router (also supporting IPv6), good customer service and regular firmware updates.

I have a 7590 with some Gigaset DECT phones (others will work as well), if you don't need POTS, a 7530 will do the job as well. You can pick them up s/h on eBay for around £30

Thanks for the reply.

I've got some vague idea that the Linksys ATAs are no longer supported, for example the PAP2T - is this the case?

Personally I would go down the Gigaset route.

the N300A base station and some handsets would be a good start.

I've been pleased with LiGo as a supplier.

Andrews & Arnold have a support page for the N300

My existing Panasonic handsets will register to the Gigaset base station but feature support (incoming number etc.) seems poor and they don't owe me much so I got replacement Gigaset handsets.

I actually have the PAP2T, I haven’t touched it since I first connected it. The phones I have connected to it are the BT8500 DECT cordless with answerphone built into the base.
