Formatting...

I updated a laptop my girlfriend gave me running 98 to 2000..but cos the language was diff it made a partition. Have been trying to delete the 98 partition to no avail..

My friend says there is a 'freeware' prog the will totally format the hd so i can just start a-fresh...but..cannot remember the name..

Over to you..or if you know another way to format the hd so i can just put on the 2000..

Thanks folks..oh..and..

Happy new Year..hope you al had a good holiday. :D

Does that mean Windows 2000 created a dual-boot system? If so you'd have to be careful about killing the Win98 partition in case it held part of the essential boot files.

Otherwise Win2000 should have its own 'Disk Management' application, although it's been so long since I used 2K that I can't recall for certain. Usually you'd goto:

Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Computer Management..

On the new window "Disk Management" would be one of the bottom options on its left side, allowing you to fiddle with partitions and so forth. Bare in mind that Window's own method is a little bit crude.

By the sounds of it a seperate partition has been created on the hard drive.

To get rid of this you will need to run a program called fdisk, delete both the partitions and start again.

This is however a small pain when ever you have to do this, the last time i had this problem it took me nearly an hour to delete both, create a new one, and then format the newely created one.

After doing this you will be able to install windows 2000.

Hope this helps and that i havent confused to much.

I want to dump ME and swap to XP.
From my start up disk I can get to
C:/fdisk
then it baffles me with questions about creating or deleting partitions, and what label to use for the partition it decides it wants.
C drive is 20 gig, no partition
D drive is a separate 80 gig HD currently empty

Forget fdisk and just use the Windows 2k installation disc. That will allow you to delete all partitions and create a new NTFS partition, from that you can perform a clean install. Just follow the onscreen prompts.

Have you the drivers for the laptop?

If not and you erase everything, then you may have a problem getting everything to work correctly.

Tread carefully.

er..ok..

Ya..it created a dual boot..cos 98 was in Italian and i want English and my wireless card needs 2000 as a minimum..it all went up the swany from there...

I dont have any driver disks as the notebook was pre-owned by Noah and i think they are long lost. Its an hp omnibook xe3L, i only want it for msn/skype really so its fine for me..but it needs all its got..and dual boot dont help at all....

Closure..

Thanks guys...i bit the bullet.ran D-Ban and installed an OS..all is fine with the world once more!! Though she's sluggish..but it works..

Many thanks, as always..Kev.

Ah....

One more thing...i need the prog that makes the touchpad 'do more' edge scrolling..sticky drop/drag etc etc.

It was installed before the format..and, yep..I forgot to write it down!!

Anyone know what it is please..?

ok..found it...

Synaptics, they do a driver that makes the touchpad do all it can..scrolling..hold'n'Drag..

just if anyone else looks and has the same problem.....

:)
