Found a trick

I imagine other people have had problems with mobile internet. Mainly the speed but am talking about the connection itself. One minute your browsing fine you stop to look at a page then to start browsing again it takes a long time Sometimes stops working there. I have found a fix for this simply open a Command Prompt window ( Windows Button + R Then type Run) then type in the following:

ping 8.8.8.8 -t

Now your connection won’t have them problems anymore :)

p.s Remember to do this every time you connect. And keep the window open.

Hmm I wonder why pinging an anycast address like that would make a difference?

In any case my solution is usually just to press the browsers "refresh" or "reload" button a couple of times :) .

It can be any address. Its basically a Keep-Alive

Connect to 3g and you will see what i meen. after a period of not browsing your modem will turn blue instead of cyan (If not using this trick)

Daniel,

I am failing to see the trick? This is pretty basic networking stuff your reporting and one that would not be needed if your 3G (or any other form of connectivity) was setup correctly.

Not everyone owns a Network Martin... its not aimed at yourself its aimed at the people who are getting constant problems and are unaware on how to resolve it. And i have yet to come across a modem or device that does it automatically..

Or perhaps your knowledge of how 3g works is limited.

We use 3G with an antenna and a wireless router (no dongle, SIM goes in the router), but prior to that we had a dongle too.

It never dropped the connection when idle, and still doesn't. it did go down for two hours last week but that was something else. If you go to this PC and call up a web page (it's "always on") it doesn't "connect" first. It's already connected.

We get quite good signal strength and we're 2.7km from the cell with near line of sight.

That's on Three. However if we try O2, it keeps flipping from one cell to another as the signal is borderline for both. Which makes the connection "go away" for a while and then return by itself a bit later (or not)

There's one bit of our local town where you can't get a signal on O2 at all. Yet strangely if you're in a call already and you walk into that area, it won't drop the call. But, you can't make a new one. I wonder if something like this might be happening and the "keep alive" you're running is helping it maintain the connection.

I wonder if it's a power or capacity saving feature on specific modems as I too have never had this problem, except of course when you go outside the range of the service. We had to do a lot of Mobile Broadband testing between 2010 and 2011 with different modems and the WIBE, many of which were often left idle inbetween tests and they always popped back to life immediately when we returned.

I think it could also be area related. AM sure the cell site near me does this. I amagine its serving in excess of 3k Customers.

But yeh. if you dont do this on some occasions the modems light stays stuck on blue untill you reconnect.

I wonder if it's some sort of "stale session" issue.

The modem is connected. It is sync'ed properly. It hasn't dropped as such. That's based on my memory which is telling me that our old E367 modem went solid green for GRPS, solid light blue for HSPA, and flashed when (re)negotiating a connection.

It is the sort of thing that used to happen on O2 but I never tried your technique.

It also used to happen on Three when the modem started failing. First it slowed down to about 1Meg, then it would silently drop sessions. A replacement one sorted it and the speed shot back up to 5Meg even without getting the positioning spot on.

Without knowing more I also wonder if it's possible that this has to do with TCP-IP networking on your machine. Have you tried the modem in the same place with a different device?

Its nothing to do with my TCPIP stack.

Connect to Mobile broadband

then dont do anything for a few minutes, you will notice the modem turns blue. try using the internet. You will have to wait for some time for it to start working again. my method solves this.

For all the debate, if it keeps the connection alive then it is a great tip. You shouldnt need to, but hey if works then great!
