Frequent small lockups with new Router

Hi Guys

I was recently having trouble with drop-outs using an internal PCI adsl modem. I was pretty sure after some time that it was the modem at fault, so today I went out and purchased an Origo ASR-8400 router as a replacement. It installed no problems and is connecting fine. Also seems to have cured the drop-outs (touch wood lol).

I have however noticed now that every few minutes my computer freezes for a split second, and then kicks back in again. It's noticable when browsing the net and playing games on-line. Any ideas what's causing this? Could it be the router, or the connection between it and my ethernet card? It's a bit frustrating to have another problem to solve on the first day with this new gadget lol. Any advise or suggestions appreciated.

Thanks

chk your network card drivers. try upgreading thing I dont think it's any thing to do with the router.

I would say try a different ethernet card...

Sounds like your current one is misbehaving (unless you are using the USB port on the ASR?)

try disabling your floppy drive

What would that do Captain Cretin?

If the problem only appeared after using the router, why would the floppy drive just start causing it?

Thanks for all the advice so far guys. Another twist in the story happened after switching my router off last night. The ADSL modem bit of it seemed to die when i tried to reconnect. The link light didn't come on, didn't flash, didn't try to connect to the broadband line at all. I couldn't access the internet explorer settings, nothing. I tried resetting it several times, but that did nothing.

I ended up returning it today for a replacement. The really helpful computer man of course told me there was nothing wrong with it and it was my fault for turning it off. I proceeded 2 tell him I am in the computer business and could he explain why there's an on/off switch on the unit when you shouldn't turn it off. Arrogant computer people. Anyways, i'm rambling.......

The new one seems to be working for now (phew), but I haven't had the balls to turn it off yet after what he said lol. It still is freezing the computer every few minutes for a split second though. I'm thinking it could be my network card too after the advice. It's a few years old, and isn't one of the 10/100 ones, just a 10 i think, + it's using default XP Winbond W89C940 drivers. Perhaps I need to spend a couple more quid on a more up-to-date network adapter?

Did you ask him what you should do in the case of a power-cut?

Mmm if its only a 10mb one then it is very old. Definately get a new NIC. They aren't that expensive (a few quid off ebuyer)

I had a similar problem after loading a driver off of a floppy, the PC decided to check the floppy every 30secs or so afterwards until i disabled it in the bios, causing the system to "pause" momentarely.
I also had a similar problem with a creative Soundblasterlive! until i disabled the "live" part.

You did either disable or uninstall the PCI modem? If not then could be that the modems control panel trying to get it to sync constantly, so adding Sytem/CPU load everytime.
