As you’re both talking about Plusnet/Wanadoo prices, may I remind you of this recent discussion on Ispr:

http://www.ispreview.co.uk/talk/showthread.php?t=14758

Also take into consideration any possible fees incurred for ending a contract within 12 months of the commencement date.
Some ISPs are not very forthcoming on this particular matter, whilst to be fair, other ISPs clearly depict cancellation fees that may be incurred for ending a contract within 12 months of its commencement.

Yes, I agree. I dont think the Wanadoo offer is uncompetitive, but also think there are other equally competitive offers. And I agree that with Plusnet and other low price deals, there is an added startup cost to recover.

But of course the Wanadoo offer also has its own drawbacks:
The contract is 12 months.
If you hit the 2Gb usage limit, the account is stopped! the only usage extension offered is £12 to unlock unlimited use. So the cost of 2.1Gb is £30/month. Thats going to make some nice cash I reckon.

Whereas with Plusnet you can purchase extra bandwidth at £2.50 Gb units.

So lets see: payback on £100 startup costs on Plusnet at;
1Gb usage: 33 months
2Gb usage: a long time
but if 2-3Gb usage everyother month: 16 months

And what about Metronet:
1Gb usage: 30 months
2Gb usage: a long time
alternate 1Gb / 2-3Gb: 16 months

So they will payback probably in a maximum of a couple of years, and then money being saved, plus you can leave these contracts if you want to in 1 or 3 months. You can switch to lower cost competitors. Their price will follow market falls in less than yearly increments. And comparing Metronet and Wanadoo broadband on the reports on this forum is an interesting story!

But going back to our original debate its eight days since someone phoned and confirmed that yes FSmail does have a fault (despite Freeserve spending the previous 16 days saying it was my fault), no-one has called again to update me, and my mail is still being truncated - now 32 days since the fault started. I am less than impressed.

I have moved my Email to a domain POP. It would be hard to justify not registering my objection at this point by choosing an alternative broadband supplier, especially one which I wont be locked into.

Well if you do go with Wanadooo at least you'll know what quality of support to expect  ;)

Thats a bit unfair, considering this isnt an easy problem to solve quickly...

Phil, give them another ring to check up on it :)

Not really

When I worked as a programmer for a bank, if a new fault was discovered after implementing software we reversed off the changes.

If this wasn't possible we stayed at work until the problem was fixed.

Assuming FS emails actually worked correctly in the past it should be possible to go back to that setup until a solution is found.

Anyway if an ISP really blocked mail with words like hello in the subject, I wouldn't waste my time using their email system. :p

No thanks:
1) They know what the problem is, I explained it 20 times and they admitted it twice
2) They have my mobile number on which I can be reached 98% of the time.
3) It will cost me money to phone support - and its their problem not mine

and anyway
my main Email is now migrated to a domain POP.

At this point its no longer a show stopper for me, but I am interested in how long Wanadoo is prepared to annoy other people on the Yahoo lists, so I am acting as a feedback point to the lists for anything constructive which Wanadoo has to say ????

My compliments to you on your last but one message, backed-up by some very useful and well-researched information, rather than just some silly wide sweeping statements.

If I may just expand on a few of your comments:

If you hit the 2Gb usage limit, the account is stopped!
It’s not actually stopped. According to Wanadoo’s website, later this year they will introduce a restriction on the service for the remainder of the month in which a user reaches the limit.
It seems that a restricted service will allow the user to use emailing facilities, although I suspect that browsing/surfing may not be possible for the remainder of the month unless a removal of the restriction is purchased.

…only usage extension offered is £12 to unlock unlimited use. So the cost of 2.1Gb is £30/month
The £12 purchase for removing the usage restriction, will of course then allow the user completely unlimited restriction, not just 2.1Gb or there about.
However, as you correctly mentioned this would equate to nearly £30 for that particular month, whilst IIRC the same level of unrestriction would cost approximately £25 from Plusnet.

Furthermore, should a user find they frequently use more capacity than expected, they can change their current service to that of a more suitable capacity up to 3 times per year.
However, dependant upon a number of conditions there may be a transfer charge involved, and unfortunately Wanadoo doesn’t seem to have that many alternative options at this particular moment in time.

I dont think the Wanadoo offer is uncompetitive
Personally, I think the £17.99 512k x 2Gb is a pretty good offer and will be more than suitable for the majority of people.
However, I don’t quite have the same opinion with regards to Wanadoo’s 512k x 15Gb offer costing £27.99 per month.

Exactly what features, as you call them do AOL give you that you cannot find either on the Wanadoo website, or the internet itself?

IE - nothing - its an AOL intranet they give you, which in essence most of the information can be found elsewhere.

Wanadoo give you antivirus and spam protection - it might not be perfect but what system is?

The Wanadoo website has all the news and entertainment, provided by ananova (prolly one of the best sources) and also has its music club whereby you can purchase mp3 downloads.

Need I list more?

Limiting bandwidth, at least they are being honest about it and not sticking it in the T&C's or just not putting it in plain english in T&C's.

Bandwidth capping is here to stay (IMHO) and will become more and more the norm once ISPs realise the bandwidth hogs cost them too much - those peeps that are just out for the free lunch and abuse it.

They'll wise up, just like most have with dialup.

ha ha ha AOL still haven't impose any limit on the dial up account so I highly dought tat they will bring any limit on AOL BB

15 gig/ month is not enough for any body. Only reason people join on BB is to watch movies etc. wat so if u reach ur limit no internet till next month tats just crazy

can u find me a free source tat aol offers. Like the mtv videos and foot ball highlights .

Wanadoo home page is boring as ever full of adverts

Hello!!, 15Gb is enough for most people - I doubt most people realise (you included) that even with movies and videos, unless you are using it 24/7 non stop that you wont even get near 15Gb.

www.mtv.co.uk
www.premiumtv.co.uk
www.sky.com
www.bbc.co.uk

Interactive on Sky/Freeview/Cable

Search www.google.com and you'll find it. Its not exclusive to AOL. Who mentioned Free? I meerly mentioned it can be found elsewhere.

*yawn* AOL's isnt exactly free of ads is it? I find the Wanadoo page very good when I need information about whats going on.

I know many sites but it's very easy to find it on a one place and some are aol exclusive contents. Tats y in us people pay extra to use their software :)

Guys, its all becoming just a little bit boring.
Cant you find something else to argue about??
Either of you played the Frostbite addon campaign for Ghost Recon????
Maybe we could start a "My snipers better than your sniper" thread?????

This issue does appear to have been addressed about a week ago. Now a single dot on a line on its own does not any longer result in message truncation. It does get turned into two dots though !? and two into three etc, so they still dont have it quite right, but at least the truncation is resolved.

Well done Wanadoo - but; this managed to take about 40 days and endless Emails. And despite a promise to phone me when it was resolved I wasnt phoned, although I did receive a letter ! asking me to ring them !???. Since phoning customer service is by all accounts expensive I have no intention of phoning. Since both my numbers have answerphones they didnt try very hard. I dont think the service is good enough for someone spending a shade of £200/year on the service.

I have taken my Email to a domain on oneandone, and signed up for Metronet broadband. Perhaps its asking too much for such a large company to be responsive.
