FTTB broadband

is anyone on FTTB as I'm with Hyperoptic, Hyperoptic like building FTTB cause it easier and cost effective to deploy gigabit broadband they only build FTTB in buildings with multiple units where they might find it hard to bring FTTP

the fibre is terminated at the building. This is typically done for buildings with multiple units, where individual units may be serviced differently.

I was thinking why dont I have an optical network terminal like my uncle, aunty sister and cousin brother do now I know why.

Do any other provider build FTTB other then Hyperoptic.

Am I the only one with FTTB would like to know other people who are on FTTB with other providers if there is any

Hyperoptic only to my knowledge.

It was their traditional deployment method - fibre into the building (often an EAD service ‘leased line’ provided by Openreach) then distribution using an Ethernet switch arrangement with 4-pair UTP cabling (Cat5e) run to individual dwellings.

They switched to a “full fibre” model of deployment later on and I understand that is now their default means of deployment.

That means they will have to upgrade my building then to FFTP in future.

They can easily deliver up to and including 1000 Mbps (line rate) symmetric on copper. Actually the cabling would allow them to deliver 2500 Mbps full duplex using standard 2.5GBaseT over the existing Cat5e to each dwelling…(with a basement switch upgrade and customer CPE / their NTE at the dwelling)

I would say that unless there was an overwhelming urgency to deliver a greater deal more data throughput than that to each household - the copper cabling that was initially installed by then is likely to remain as is. For the foreseeable future anyhow.

If there was real desire / need to provide say 5Gbps or 10Gbps service to individual customers it would be a copper to fibre upgrade from basement to flat.

New blocks of flats / installs are another matter and they will likely install fibre now from the off.

If the Cat5e that was installed was of a decent standard, along with the modules either end, and the cable runs are below 40m, then 10G should be possible.

Possible yes, but wouldn’t be guaranteed to work as it’s not certified to run over Cat5e at any length (despite what works in the field). None of the structured cabling vendors would stand by it nor any of the equipment vendors.

To be fair, I can’t realistically see them moving past 1Gbps on copper.
