Fttp help

I currently have a bt fttp contract which ends soon. I am thinking of switching to a company that uses CityFibre but have a couple of questions I hope someone can answer.
Some of the cheaper companies use CGnat and charge extra for static ip. We only use the Internet for browsing and streaming. We don't do gaming. Most evenings there are at least 3 devices streaming tv/movies, as well as some smart devices etc. Would CGnat affect this? Also would a local company be better than a national company? Sorry I don't really understand much about this subject so advice from people that understand this would be very helpful.

CGNAT Won't affect most people. It's only for self hosting for example if you have a server at home or if you play a few games where you host an online session for others to connect to rather than connecting to an external server somewhere.

For someone like you browsing and streaming there is no difference to you. Maybe a slight increase in latency, but again nothing that would be noticeable in real world use.

Which companies are you considering on CityFibre? Some of them are quite bad both in terms of connection and customer service. While CGNAT may not be a reason to avoid them there may be other reasons. Going for the absolute cheapest is rarely a good idea.

If your main requirement is a reduction of cost then someone else on Openreach would be a simple choice.

For example Plusnet is similar to the BT service but usually cheaper (no phone service available however). Try a price comparison site for options.

Depending on when your current contract ends you may find that early next year you could contract fo a service where the first price rise is in 2026.

With cheaper services the “baked in” price rise is well worth including in the calculation.

Thank you for the info. Companies that are local to me that i was considering are lightning fibre and toob. Both have reasonable reviews. The other 2 i was looking at that always seem to get good reviews are zen and idnet although these are both more expensive.

If you can get Toob then absolutely go for it. They are a regional provider only available in specific CityFibre areas but if you are lucky enough to have them available then they seem to get the balance just about right for service vs price.
