FTTP install - no existing active OR service

Hello there, I did try searching for this on the forum, but couldn't find a thread that that relevant. My area is going through the motions of FTTP install, they're about to start pulling fibre to the poles in the street. Since I moved to the property I've just been using Virgin Media haven't had any active OpenReach provided service.

When they do the FTTP install, do the contractors try to install to every property, or only to those that have an OR active service? Would I have to do anything or will they usually approach me?

Additionally my house appears to be unusual - everyone else takes their service off a pole + overshead wire including neighbours either side, but my house is provided by an underground cable and has it's own BT chamber in the pavement outside. The former owner was a BT employee but it still seems strange as providing service from a pole is possible. My guess is that trying to use an underground route will be hassle for all concerned so is it likely they will try to use a pole and overhead wire for a fibre install?

Thanks

The fact that your specific property was once fed underground is probably a historic issue. OH is proving an effective distribution method for both OR and Cityfibre so it is most likely OH will be used but I'd leave it to them and discuss on the day when you agree the entry point.

If you are in specific conversion areas OR will leave the copper service to properties and only provide FTTP on request via the ISP. As you have not had an OR service then OR will do nothing until requested.

Adding to that, nobody will install anything on your property unless you actually place an order for the service. Only after you've placed an order will they asses the most viable delivery method for the final drop into your home.

Ah, ok, thanks both. So in terms of a FTTP rollout in the town, they just take it to the last point of the OR infrastructure (pole or chamber), and it's only when there is an order for an FTTP service that they bring it onto the customers premises.

I had probably incorrectly assumed that because there's an aspiration to turn off analogue services in the medium term they would go further than the telegraph pole and try and get the cable to the front door as much as possible.

Yeah they don't do that, they'll usually take it as close to your property as possible, such as to a pole or a toby box in the pavement at the bottom of your drive. If they had to do every house in the UK at the same time as they were deploying then that would be a nightmare.
