If you need longer runs or to connect different buildings you should use fiber. You can buy ready-made patch cords or any length and all you need at each end is a couple of switches with SFP or SFP+ interfaces. Certainly if you go outdoors you should consider fibre as it will be subject to electromagnetic interference nor be at risk or electro shocks from lighting strikes.Just remember recommended maximum cable run is 90m for cat5/6/6a

So, I found where the wire comes in to the garage (yellow dot), then disappears up into the house (red dot). This is at the front of the house, so don't think they're going to be able to easily follow this same route up to where the current socket is
