FTTP install times

Hello all!

I'm in the process of buying a newly built property, and I noticed that it has a grey FTTP box already installed on the exterior by the front door. I went back through my photos from the original viewing and I can't see an ONT on the opposite side of the wall where I would expect it to be.

I work from home, so it's important to have broadband up and running as soon as possible when I move in so I decided to check the BT Wholesale checker and got:

ONT exists with no active service. A spare port is available. A new ONT may be ordered.

This suggests an ONT is lurking somewhere out of view, but it also is listed as a 1 stage install, which I understood means that it needs an engineer visit.

I'm trying to work out the lead time for the installation so that I can time the order such that it's not before we have keys, but not too long after we move in.

Are there cases of a grey exterior box, but no ONT despite what the checker says?

Any insight as to what this usually means is welcome!
Cheers

If it's a new build the ont could be anywhere inside as the internal wiring was maybe installed at time of the build ,if you can try check next to electric meter/fuse board on under staircase etc

Aha, well I've managed to gain access later this week - so hopefully I will find where they've hidden it then!

Good to know about the install date options, thats probably the way forward regardless.

Thanks!

100% will be in a cupboard somewhere hopefully with sockets providing internet to the rest of the house :P

setup a slim rack and your be a pro in no time :P

only thing they don't do which annoys me is run cables for AP's but a friend moved into a newish house, and just left his face down in his loft, and it works perfect.

ONTs are assigned/paired to the property so if the BT Wholesale checker says there's an ONT then there will be an ONT. If so, there will be no need for an engineer visit.

When I bought my new-build a few years ago, the ONT was nowhere near the grey CSP but was instead mounted on the wall in the cupboard under the stairs. They ran the fibre through the walls while the walls were still open.

I contacted my service provider (which was IDnet at the time) a couple weeks in advance and arranged for my service to migrate so that it would be active on the completion date and, sure enough, it was already active by the time I got the keys.

There is a cupboard opposite the door where the electrical consumer unit is, so perhaps it's in there. I will check when they let me in on Friday.

If there is already an active ONT as the checker suggests, why would it show as a 1 stage install though? I can't see what there would be for an engineer to do on-site?

Yeah, runs for APs or in-wall jacks would be nice. I think there are TV Ariel runs to each bedroom, so I might see if I can swap those for ethernet jacks and pull some Cat 6 to the loft with the cables.

No idea, but mine said and still says Stage 1 too and yet no engineer visit was needed.

You may find the TV, mains and ethernet cables all have been taped to the wall prior to the plasterboard being fitted. So if your plan is to use the TV cable to pull ethernet I don't think that will work. Better plan may be to rent a cable puller which you should be able to run down the cavity from the loft to pick up the new ethernet.

If that makes sense!

Ah, good point - not something I'd have thought of - so thanks for the warning.
I don't want to baz up the walls and cabling on day one!

Day 1 is the best day to do this. e.g. prior to submitting your snagging list :ROFLMAO:

  1. large channel in the plasterboard filled with cabling left uncovered.
rrrrrrrrrrrridiculas!

I have an ONT with a green PON light but no FTTP service active on it, the BTw checker shows a 1-stage install and the notes say that there's already an ONT in place. I don't think it's possible for the database to show a "0-stage" install process.

Going slightly off-topic but I believe in France the building regulations now are for in-house cabling to be Cat6, with baluns used at each end to get a coaxial plug and socket if you want to put a TV signal through it, if you don't want to put in TV distribution as well - the network outlets are a requirement.

Also seems like all network outlets need to be ducted back to the comms area and not clipped so the cables can be pulled out and replaced with fibre or whatever in the future.
