FTTP ONT and adjacent power socket (or lack thereof)

I understand that, for Openreach FTTP installs at least, there is supposed to be an electricity socket near to the desired ONT location in order to provide it with the required power.

In practice, are Openreach (or their contractors) engineers actually likely to refuse to install an ONT in a certain place if there is not an adjacent or nearby power socket?

If you can run power to it in a safe manner using something like an extension cable that neatly runs power to where you want it, they'll almost certainly agree to it. They just need to see it working to be able to sign off on the job. If there's no power they can't verify the connection is working.

You will need to be able to power the ONT so they can make the service live, but they won't care if this is an extension lead. If you get any pushback just explain how you've got an electrician coming in next week.

Thank you @Koda and @jpm. In this instance it would be a case of running a short extension lead from a socket which is hidden away (and normally inaccessible) behind a bit of furniture - having a new more conveniently located power socket fitted is a possibility, but it's good to hear it's not an unconditional pre-requisite.

Thinking more about it, the furniture probably needs to be moved anyway so as to provide more space for drilling through the wall.

I have an extension lead running to my ONT, engineer didn't say a word about it, happily used it

Thanks. I think a new easily accessible power socket is likely desirable, not least as a powerline adapter is part of the set-up, but it might be easier to have the electric outlet installed after the FTTP installation has happened.

(And yes I'm well aware of the likely reaction to the mention of powerline adapters, i.e. that running Cat6 ethernet is better - in this case though it's just not needed and would be very disruptive and a lot of effort for no appreciable benefit.)

There are other alternatives as well and these don't have to be Cat6 cable. Pre-made fibre patch cords are relatively cheap and easy to use. The thinness of the fibre means they can be almost hidden around skirting boards or door architraves. Have a look at this post for some sample products:

Moving the ONT to another place can allow you to move the router as well or remove the need for your powerline adapters that no doubt are adding latency and reducing your bandwidth. Maybe you don't need the additional speed today but a simple fibre patch cord could simplify your setup and avoid running unnecessary hardware which consumes more power. So just because your current setup "works" it doesn't mean is the best / optimal setup nor that it will stand the test of time. I used an additional patch cord to move my ONT to my study and I don't really regret it.

They just require power, and however it is presented it needs to be safe. Other than that they don't care.
