I have a BT voip phone line provided via the Openreach ONT but wondered how on earth I can migrate the telephone number to another ISP or voip service. I am nearly out of contract with BT but looking for a new provider, I would rather keep the number if possible.
At present the process of switching your phone number to a VoIP provider is still quite manual, although I understand from some ISPs that when it's moving away from BT then a few providers are better equipped to handle it than others (you have to ask the new provider first). We actually covered this a lot last year and there are some caveats to consider:
The way people use home phone services is changing and many of us will eventually end up replacing our old analogue voice service with a Voice-over-Internet-Pro

A new and more automated number portability process is currently being designed, but it's unclear when this will enter the mainstream.. it's still at the experimental stage.
Hi Mark, thank you I did read the article last year but as I am technically VoIP moving from a BT VoIP service to another “service” I was unsure and in a bit of a grey area.
As the BT VoIP number is part of my FTTP package I suspect my FTTP will cease when it ports?
