FTTP Routers

Hi

I've had FTTP made available and am thinking that I'll very shortly be placing an order for it. I'm going to need a new router. I've never been one for going with the ISP provided routers!

Can anyone suggest what would be good, compatible router please? I'm probably not wanting to go bargain basement on it, but equally not the very top end. I've used quite a bit of tplink gear in the past, but am not precious about it!

Thanks

With FTTP you'll generally get your ONT (the fibre cable goes into this) and then this connects with a standard Cat5/6 ethernet cable to a router.

There's plenty of routers. Mine's a bit pricey - I'm currently using a Linksys WRT1900AC but I love it. Excellent performance. I've previously used the TP-Link Archer range (I think it was a C7) and they perform very well too. They're generally priced very well and do a pretty good job and are very configurable.

Only thing you really need to look out for is that it's a 'cable' router, it supports gigabit ethernet/WAN for your full FTTP speeds, and not a BT/ADSL/VDSL2 router that uses a phone line.

Many thanks TTJJ. I know a bit about how the general setup is (ie ONT -> router), it was more on what is a good, reliable, well performing router.

I've used a good bit of TP-Link gear before, and had a quick look at the Archer A7 (which sounds like it is the same as the C7, but with some additional features for use with Alexa). I'll check out the WRT1900AC. If you don't mind me asking, why did you change?

The Alexa features are very limited to be honest. Do remember that they the C7/A7 and C1200 are older units now.

I would maybe advise looking at the C60, it's a current 2020 model, features and standards are pretty inline with C7, but your paying around £30 less for it.

I only changed to the WRT1900AC because I regularly use a VPN and the processor in the Linksys one is significantly more powerful for those type of things when running on a third-party OS (OpenWrt). For just it’s intended use the C7 did a very good job and it’s currently installed in my grandparents house. Hasn’t required a reboot or any tinkering for about a year it’s impressive.

Thanks a lot guys. Although I've got a few Alexa's, I wouldn't think I'd be using those features much at all. I only bought that up to mention I had come across the A7 (matching TTJJ's C7). Good to know that it's an older model.

My grandparents C7 supports Alexa too though (I’m fairly sure) it came in a firmware update. I have alexa’s too and couldn’t figure out what the point of the Alexa integration was.

The A7 was originally created as an Amazon special (hence the A) and pushed hard on discount at the end of 2018 into early 2019, which was basically the C7 rebadged. Alexa command options are very limited, it was merely for a sales drive and a test of what could be done. Getting your hands on the A7 is pretty hard now. To be honest TP-Link produce better units for 2020.

I've been poking around and have seen the Archer AX1500 (https://www.amazon.co.uk/TP-Link-AX1500-Wi-Fi-6-Router/dp/B089DJJ5RS). That sounds pretty decent. Any thoughts/comments on how it compares to what has already been suggested? It looks like I'll probably be going for an install mid July to fit in with some work commitments, so the lead time isn't a barrier

That's actually a pretty amazing price for it. Was retailing in excess of £115 around March, so for £79.99, that basically makes the C7 obsolete. The AX1500 is new for 2020.

I’ve not come across that one before but looking over the specs it seems very powerful for the price. WiFi 6 too. Very intriguing.
