Gaming router

Hi guys.

I was looking at getting a gaming router so decided to read some reviews but all I found on Reddit was extremely conflicting views. I’d say over a half of users say that gaming routers are a scam, that any basic router would do as long as your console is hardwired and they are very vocal about it.

So I was looking at a TP link router like AX6000 or a Netgear Rax 120 or 200. One thing which makes me concerned about getting TP Link is that in my experience TP Link are very bad at releasing new firmware updates, sometimes they do it just once a year and once your router reaches the End of Life stage they stop it all together. Do you think this is something to be concerned about? Would you say that in your experience TP Link routers are reliable and secure?

I always liked Netgear, they are easy to use and get regular updates, however they do have their own fair share of problems.

I’d be really grateful if some of your could share your experience and knowledge.

Thank you.
Ricky :)

To put this into context, I have a wired access point upstairs NETGEAR (see signature), my gaming Pc is about 5-6meters away from the access point with glass in between.

Ignore the fact Virgin Media have crap pings, I can play any multiplayer game just fine and this unit isnt targeted for gamers, any router or access point you get will be good enough today, if your going wireless get AX and get a PC AX adapter!

I get around 600-700Mb download and the full 100Mb upload.

If your Esports paid professional then ignore the above :)

I would side with this. It's marketing nonsense.

Some routers may have better QoS features, but even those you can do without with a decent enough connection (ie, you probably don't need to think about this if you have 100s of Mbps).

I’ve got Netgear switches and APs. Should be enough then. It’s just feels that other gamers are always faster than you 😂.

They certainly are good at marketing. Some of those routers look real futuristic, like spaceships that are about to take off.

Spend money on a new mouse with better DPI, I swear it will make you faster ;)

Two options I would suggest

Xiaomi BE7000 Wifi 7 router from Aliexpress.
Or
Buy yourself a 4xlan Intel NUC PC and put PFsense on there.

If you use PFsense you can tweak every little thing about your setup if you think something will improve gaming.

The best thing you can do for gaming is waiting until you can get FTTP.

Xiaomi make very good low priced hardware. My setup is I have PFsense on an intel Nuc with multiple Xiaomi routers as Wifi extenders throughout my house. Even if I won the lottery I would keep this setup for myself.
