Gaming With Wireless Broadband?

Just wondered whether gaming on wireless broadband would be gud??? the ISP i am about to join said the wireless latency was .2 millisecond and that satellite is around 1 second. I am assuming that this means wireless is good for gaming purposes :D

As the ping from my PC to my router and back is 0.1 I doubt the ping from your PC to a game server is 0.2.
It should be a lot faster than sat though, expect pings arroundabout 20-50 as an average, although it can go upto and beyond 100ms at peak times or on distant servers.
Some ISP's post their average ping to various parts of the world on their status page(well, Pipex do)

What connection do you have caption?? u got wireless connection as well? i think i will go for the beaming broadband service as its better than 56k. Also i am not sure when BT will decide to upgrade our exchange.

I will be using online gaming most for counterstrike :D hopefully wireless internet will hold a low ping.

The service i am opting for is download 1024kb, upload 256kb for £35 a month

I have a standard ADSL connection, but the pings from a wireless setup should only be marginally higher; light speed to the wireless station then standard cable from there.

The latency on the wireless part will be largely irrelevant. I find a latency of about 3ms average over a few miles of a wifi link. If it has to go through a few wireless hops, its about 3ms per hop. Not that I trust XP for timing that low down anyway.

What is far more relevant is how your wireless ISP connectes to the internet. A lot use satellite for backhaul, so the pings are as bad as satellite. Some use 2meg adsl, which will give gaming pings in the end of around 60ms or so (dsl ping + wireless ping = overall). If you're one of the lucky ones who has an ISP using a leased line backhaul, then your pings could be as low as 5ms, but probably closer to 20ms.

as an avid cs player myself I can say that the ping experienced on beaming broadband was not stable and varied between 60 and 300. The technical guys did their best to help sort this out but they were unable to find a solution.

Snowwhite u use msn messenger? if so add me on ees2203@hotmail.com or yahoo messenger happy_2008@yahoo.co.uk

I am with beaming broadband and i cant realli do nething with them, download is fine but when it comes to gaming/p2p downloading i get loads of problems.

I am currently looking into orbital networks. If i terminate my service do i get my installation costs back?

Quick Note:
I decided not to terminate my service as beaming broadband has resolved my gaming issue. Originally the gaming issue could not be sorted hence the fustration but now everything has been sorted. I must admit that the beaming broadband staff were really helpful in my problem particularly Steve who decided to look into my problem at midnight

If your Wireless ISP is using Satellite for the backhaul then you are probably stuck with it.

Hi, im looking into purchasing beaming broadband - but after looking over this thread iv seen evidence of bad pings? can any1 confirm this at the moment. Also, is it true that you are unable to use p2p sharing on beaming broadband?
