Geforce4 MX440

A few months ago I bought a geforce4 mx440 128mb with tv out. I really liked it til now.

Over the last month I have found games that I have been unable to play. First there was Turok then the new deus ex. Now Gladiator - new game - wont play properly, although I get the intro screen ok.

I have looked through the manual and it tells me nothing.

Any ideas on what I should do? Can someone tell me if its the card, a possible configuration problem, or do I need a new card? That means money which I have little of at the moment to spend on my pc - due to xmas.

Any help would be appreciated.

Richard

Its more than likely your graphics card not being able to cope..

Are you still able to play your older games ?
What's the rest of your system like ?

A budget of around £110 mark should get you a Radeon 9600pro 128Mb, which will run any game out now and well into next year without any problems.

Are games that you've previously played ok using the card still playing correctly ?

You system looks well above the usual minimum specs that games require.

I can play old games ok. MOH Breakthrough is fine, halo was excellent.

I should have given more info at the start. If i config my settings to 1024 and 32bit colours, I get the intro of Gladiator ok. However, after the intro the screen goes black and I have to reboot.

If I sent the config to 800 I then get an error saying my settings wont allow the game to work.

Have you got msn messenger or trillian? Can u spare a few mins Promod please?

sent you a PM, which you may have gotten by now :-)

thats kind of you ip. After speaking with Promod, it seems the card is not up to the job!

I'd never have bought it 6 months ago if I knew it wasn't new, and had been out since early 2002!

If you are up-to-date with them it's more likely to be the new 52 drivers. They also stop 'Enemy Territory' dead!!

Try rolling back to the previous ones. :)

Pimpernel, thanks for your comment but rolling back the drivers makes no difference. Its exactly the same.

Richard, I'm sorry to hear that, I was sure it would be the 52 drivers. They have been the cause of a lot of problems for anything before the latest cards, from what I've seen round the forums.

Another thing they reckon is that if you use those drivers, you MUST have DX9.0b installed. I had to roll back in order to continue playing 'ET', and am now on the previous ones (45 I think) and DX9b. No problems since. I have the GForce4 Ti 4600 card.

I wish I could help more, and hope you get it sorted soon.

:)

P.S. I have just seen that what I said above about DX9 is in the read-me file from the Deus-Ex Invisible War Demo!

I'm using the new 52.nvidia drivers and find them more stable than the 43's were, apart from style xp farting around terrible and making the taskbar do vanishing acts every now and again.

Keithcalder, I put the 52 drivers back on. The nview is wicked and allows you to see video on your tv and monitor. I recall posting a thread on such matter a while back - Perhaps Nvidia read it!

Shame the card doesn't play the new games - I was smug when I got the card after being told it would last me years!

Thanks ip for the link.

I have an old cardas well the mx460 and it is dire need of a replacemnt but think I may go to ati this time, the new gforce cards keep changing too fast leaving us, the customer having no option but to dip into the old pocket again. :)
