Gigaclear now ready to order - how to get installed / questions?

Girlfriend's place in rural location can now finally order Gigaclear. Up until now we have been using ADSL over a copper phone line. Backed up with 4G connection. Internet connection uses both with a load balancer has been working quite well for 2 year. After a bit of advice.

Do we get the fibre installed same was as telephone line. It comes into the property via a telegraph pole. Its a bungalow, so isn't that high. Has been cut a couple of times by a tractor with a front arm up (flat 8 I think).

Do we make the effort to dig a trench out to the road and lay a duct / pipe - put a rope in (to be able to pull any further ducts / fibre through) and use that to bring the fibre into the property? We have a digger for such things.

What would people do?

Also ... looking at just 200Mbps, been offered an introductory offer on 500Mbps for not a little more - but concerned about price once out of contract? Is it same as other ISPs, if you tie in for another 18 or 24 months you get better prices? Say £17 for 200Mbps, out of contract is £41. Then if renew will you get something like £17 (same as new customers) or something like £22 - it's cheaper but not as good as brand new customers.

Guess - as altnet (I think that's right) - its Gigaclear on Gigaclears fibre - no options of other ISPs?

What's happening with copper lines? Are they going or did they have a reprieve? Landline currently gets quite a bit of use. Or look at a deskphone that uses 4G and a cheap SIM? VOIP is also an option? But perhaps if Internet goes off we don't want the phone off as well?

Thanks in advance

Yeah Gigaclear run their own network etc - No other ISPs unless they have a Wholesale agreement with other ISPs but dont think they do.

As for deployment, purely on a case by case basis. They will attempt to connect you upon the install visit.

Copper will stay for the foreseeable future on Openreach. ADSL is changing to SOTAP (Single Order Transitional Access Product) - Essentially no phone line. Data Only.

Everything is transitioning to VOIP OTT Services of the connection. OR will no longer do the phone service side.

Have Gigaclear dug their own trenches in the street? Have you noticed any additional new box on the telegraph pole?

If they have trenched and put a Toby box at the edge of your property they are going to be looking at underground based delivery of the fibre optic. Broadband installation teams typically have just a hour or two to complete an installation so whilst they will trench the cable from their Toby box to the front of your property they will do minimum job. If you have the time/effort to install your own duct and leave a draw wire in it then you can do a better job where the duct is deeper. A 20mm duct is the minimum you should consider, 25mm would be better.

If there's a new box on the telegraph pole they're going to use an overhead fibre optic cable and come off the telegraph pole then it will be similar to your existing OpenReach connection (but they won't touch the existing OpenReach cable or remove it).

They will want to put a small box on the outside of the property where they transition from external to internal fibre.

Within reason, you will have some choice where the ONT goes inside the property, it doesn't need to go in the same place where the OpenReach master socket is. The ONT needs power so being close to a power socket is sensible. You don't need to put the router where the ONT is, you can run an ethernet cable between the ONT and the router location but that would be your responsibility. Think about how the installer will be able to get the fibre from outside to you preferred ONT location, is there anything you can do in advance it make it easier to avoid stuff being too visible etc.

Hope that's useful.
