Good Broadband Provider

ARK

I know that I can do some search to choose one but I think forums can help more to find the right provider.
I am looking for a reasonably priced and reliable, 2Mb package with a GOOD provider.
From past bitter experience, I would not sign up to: -
VISPS, AFFILIATES and FAKIRS (VAF).
FAKIRS = resellers, partners and those who are connected to, or promote a provider for a small commission or some benefit.
Consequently, it’s a NO, NO to the following providers: -
V21 and its VAF
Netservices PLC and its VAF
Murphx/Dmcdial and its VAF
Bloomley and its VAF
Others, who fall into this category,

I would appreciate recommendation from those who have been happy for a long time with a good provider directly supplied by BT.
Those connected to providers of the above category need not post recommendation.

i use eclipse and have had no problems other forum members have praised them also

what kind of usage would you need i get unlimited 512k for £18 or 1mb is £24 on flex which allows me to up my speed for 5p or 10p per hour up to 1mb or 2mb when i want to do some heavy downloading.

they do a 2mb £15 per month package but that has a 1gb capp

but as for reliable consistent and fair service and good backup and knowledgable help team eclipse are up there as one of the better. depending on usage.
hope you find what you are looking for

Thanks for your post.
How long have you been with them?
I would to hear from other members regarding other good providers before making a decision.

NDO/Namesco - bl**dy good ISP.
www.names.co.uk - 10 years in business, 0845 24/7 support, own network, brillaint speeds, no contention - oh at good value for omney.

Hi ARK

Ive try a couple lately....

Here are my thoughts....

Pipex.... NAH!!

Plusnet traffic shape their network. Some have no speed problems but lots do. Metronet is now part of the Plusnet group of companies so same again is happening if you check the forums.

I currently use Eclipse and have to say apart from a couple of glitches at the end of last year the network appears to be solid. They are currently offering a no quibble 1 month free trial.

As mentioned they do a capped 1gb service for 2mb but they also do an unlimited Flex service at 500k for 17.99pm and you can flex up to 2mb as you need it. Lets face it, surfing can be easily done at 500k. The flexing package costs a few pence an hour which of course you decide how long you want. Or the 2mb unlimited package is £29.99pm

Static IP free on request.

My only negative about Eclipse is their support line is not 24hrs. I think it closes around 8pm. I suppose if you dont nned support though this is not an issue.

Im not a rep, I can recommend them because I use them. Also, because I work in the IT installation business I see lots of 'bad' ISPs so I do know the difference.

Another one I would recommend is Zen Internet but they are a little more costly. They were advertised a as unlimited ISP but lately they have changed this to a limited service. Honest company though.

ive been with eclipse for just a few months but a work mate who recommended them to me has been using them for 4 years and wouldnt change. he uses 2mb flex.

very solid isp solid connection thats what you want

very little need for helpline
i use 512k flex currently getting 2mb free flex they do this often.
but 512 is fast enough for surfing and emails and occasional downloads of mp3 and video files.

Where's bulldog when you need him?

He's just completed a grand tour of some of the better known isp's - so should be able to offer some pointers. ;)

Haha, that's very true. I am still with NDO. But, probably not forever as I went over 24GB already as NDO home 2000 with 10GB cost just £19.95 but this month I expect my 1st bill of around £34 so fars.

I am thinking of switching over to Entanet which had excellent price for home max 30 at only £19.99 a month with 30gb peak time and 300gb off peak time. So, my 24gb with NDO is far expensive at nearly £34 !!! I had to cut down my usage with NDO until my 1st bill come out this month.

But, in my best knowedge experience, NDO is the best solid adsl so fars. I don't know about Eclipse but I am sure that Eclipse are good isp like Zen too.

Good luck in your search for a good isp. Avoid Plusnet.

lighterboy of ndo
oh at good value for omney

It good value for money if you use less 10gb per month then go for it, if you go over 10gb then ndo is not good value for money as I am already over 24gb. Best to be careful with ndo usage of 10gb per month. £19.95 is only for 2Mb only. (not for 8Mb cost you more £24.95 for 10gb on 8Mb with ndo)

Thanks for all the replies.
So far, the following providers have been recommended: -
Eclipse
Names
Bulldog
NDO
I will certainly look at these.
In the mean time, I would be grateful for any other recommendation.

Freeserve AKA Wanadoo

I know I sound like an old gramaphone record but I still state that Freeserve/Wanadoo are excellent. I have no intention of changing after having had 3 years of virtually no trouble. When a problem has arisen it has been a fault with my set up and the Tech support has been first class in resolving any issues.
Oh and before anyone makes a silly comment, I DO NOT work for them or have any connection except as a customer!!:smilet:

Hi Dave1167
I do appreciate your post. I was with Freeserve in the old days and had no problem with them but that was a long time ago and before they changed the name.
I will include them in my list and do some search.
Thanks a lot for your post.
I really need to be very careful now in choosing a provider due to my bitter and costly experience so far with the so called ''Internet Providers'' I signed up with.
My aim is to choose the right one and not to keep changing.

to be honest although Dave has no trouble with Wanadoo, it doesn't make them excellent. I get no trouble with UKOnline, but seeing the reviews about them, I could hardly recommend them even though I get no trouble. for all te people that have complained about them or Wanadoo, or any ISP that has had quite a few bad reviews, those people didn't give a bad review for nothing. there are people that are happy with Tiscali, and have no gripe with the service they get. but they are in minority, and any poeple going to join them would be more likely to get a crap service.

ARK, the best thing to do is read the reviews. a couple of people recommending an ISP doesn't make them a good bet.

As you said, reading reviews is important before making a decision.
I asked for genuine recommendation from members who have been happy with their providers for a long time and this to me is very important.
I would like to list all those recommended and make a comparison before deciding to sign up. It may take me some time to do so but I am prepared to wait.

i did that kept looking at websites for isp and used this forum and it took me8 months before committing. Every time i was ready to sign up the goal posts were changed by one or more isps eg doubling speed reducing fees introducing fair usage policy(plusnet)

finally had to jump with both feet which is why i chose eclipse good reviews, friends recommendation. fair usage and price. get out clause in first year since i took free noden and connection.

so dont wait too long you may miss out on somthing good.

Hi nodrog
I would not wait for as long as 8 months to select the right provider.
I have to make sure this time not to fall into the same trap I experienced few times. Once (few times) bitten, twice shy.
I am doing this for my self and two friends who asked me for advice. I am sure they are not prepared to wait for a long time.
