Good home VoIP providers?

Once out of free minutes it’s 1ppm UK to UK with EU callID.
AAisp charges 2ppm to Ireland, 1.5ppm for UK landline so €10 goes further with FVD (until rates change)
Perhaps they invest the prepaid €10 to make it pay?
it actually sounds quite interesting as when im calling people it's usually companies. so usually a land-line number. so if I use AAISP for incoming, and FVD for outgoing, then most of my calls i need to make with my VoIP number would be free! very interesting. (all my friends, I call with whatsapp anyway)

I presume then if I'm in say Spain and I open my softphone and call someone in the UK then is it UK to UK ?
Essentially, it is from a UK number to a UK number, regardless of where you are. The "from" country selection in their rates table makes no difference to what you are paying, all that matters is a EU caller ID.
how in the heck do they offer free UK to UK calling?
The EU wide call termination charge that operators can charge each other is 0.07ct for fixed line calls (0.2ct for mobiles). So, if they get 1p per minute, they already got a massive markup on the wholesale price. Giving away 120 freedays is not going to dent their profits massively. If people top up around £10 each time to get their freedays, then these guys have a very healthy cash flow and giving away a few minutes for free is hardly going to dent their profits.

When a colleague first made me aware of FVD, I could not believe that there was such a thing as a free lunch phone call, but I have now been with FVD for over ten years and must have saved £££ during that time.

Does anyone have any recommended VOIP providers for residential use?
As above, I would recommend A&A. They now charge for setup, not sure if that also applies if you are proting your number in to them. The monthly "line rental" is very reasonable at £1.44. For outbound, you can always chose another provider like FVD or similar (or use A&A), all depends on your usage.

Probably too late but I use Virtual Landline, £8.75 pcm with no contract for unlimited calls to both landline and mobiles. There is no charge (Dec 2023) for number porting as long as you stay for I think its 6 months (I think ?).

A&A charge 15 for porting your number into them. I use it now as got rid of Virgin, If you ring the Landline number it routes to both our mobiles.

decided to try out FVD
slightly worried by the fact that someone has my desired username which consists of my first name and last name together. And my name isn't a common one and im sure i haven't signed up for it before.

Personally for seated outgoing calls I use a Yealink MP50 office phone which connects via Bluetooth to most 4G phones. The Yealink detects my iPhone 13 as soon as I am in the "office" which invariably then uses WIFI Calling.

Does this mean that you can talk using the MP50 but the actual call is routed over bluetooth and then through the iPhone? If so this seems brilliant. I didn't know it was possible!

"
  • NOT SUPPORT registration of SIP account to VoIP system."
What does that mean? Can't add a VOIP account to it like say Andrews and Arnold?

The MP50 is designed to work with Microsoft Teams and in a corporate environment. It just happens to include a Bluetooth interface to phones due to it being targeted at flexi desk areas.

You cannot configure the VoIP in this device as central provision is expected. This model is tailored to Teams but others are intended for corporate VoIP.

The LinkToMobile and ConnectToCell functionality was included in some Dect sets some years ago but are now very rare. However this device is currently available and provides HD kit and reasonable quality Bluetooth interface (limitations accepted)

Provides desk phone facility use with a Smartphone and using the SIM minutes which currently provides a cheaper voice option than VoIP voice currently.

Is it usual that you can't port a mobile number into a voip provider? The one above at about £ 8 p-m, I asked and was told landline only

If you are referring to A&A the number port for VOIP is for landline. They have other options with SIM cards which presumably will allow mobile number ports.

The opposite port, a landline ported to a smartphone sim is possible.

Currently voice and text messaging is much cheaper on mobile contracts in UK than VOIP so there is less market interest in porting mobile numbers.

A&A do allow porting a mobile number to VOIP, at least how I read their site.

We can port in (and out) 07 mobile numbers. Once a number has been ported in it will be available on the Control Pages for you to configure. A number will then have the same features available as any of our other VoIP numbers.

Porting a mobile number to our service will remove the number from your existing SIM / mobile provider and it will be able to be used on our SIP service. You can then use your number with a normal SIP phone or a SIP phone system, such as Asterisk, Freeswitch, etc.

I use A&A for inbound and freevoipdeal (PAYG) for outbound.
You said you use over 1000 minutes per month, is that calling landlines?
If you top up approx. £10 on Freevoipdeal, you get max 300 minutes per week of free calls for 120 days, measured over the last 7 days to landline destinations in the UK and 30+ other countries as well as free calls to mobiles in US and Canada . The calls to destinations not included in freedays is also quite reasonable, e.g. calls to UK mobiles at 1.2p per minute. Same if the 120 days are up or if you exceed the 300 minutes per week.

Thanks, this sounds like a good combination - have you configured your router to have 2 profiles, one inbound, other outbound ? I was curious how you achieved above without alot of hassle when making calls?

On a Fritzbox, the config is a doddle. You can configure up to 20 "telephone numbers", i.e. SIP profiles with different providers

Then you can set up dialling rules for outbound calls, using different providers, e.g. 0800, 999, 112 via A&A, everything else via Freevoipdeal etc.

I understand that you can also set up DECT phones such that they only ring for calls coming in on a particular SIP profile/number, e.g. you could have two numbers for incoming calls and then get one DECT phone to ring on number 1 and the other one on number 2. (Have not tried that myself)

In a nutshell, there isn't much that you can't do with a Fritzbox when it comes to VoIP.
