Google Announces New Tablet

Does it contain asprin?? I am not allowed asprin

I got a good Android ICS tablet from China for around £140 and that had an excellent 7" IPS screen, fast CPU and plenty of memory but it lacked HDMI, Mobile Broadband and a GPS unit. So if Google can produce something like this, albeit with a good build quality and better features, for just a fraction more then it could be something that interests me.

At that price they clearly won't be making a big profit and are using aggressive tactics to undercut Apple's device, which is good news for consumers.

The Google tablet seems decent but it's in Kindle Fire territory, so no mobile broadband or other goodies. :hrmph:

Agreed you can get a decent android 4.0+ tablet now for under £150 anyway. They are a bit late to the party. They are making a big deal that its quad core, you dont need a 1.3ghz quad core processor for most stuff ya likely to do on it though. Id had personally preferred them to whack in a decent dualcore CPU and had given it a better screen and battery. 1280x800 just isnt very impressive by todays standards.

Its other downside, assuming these are correct....

Is the battery which i doubt is going to go between charges as long as some. (same roughly mah battery+faster CPU and high res screen normally equals less full charge time use) i doubt that will go 8 hours between charges especially once you start whacking some 720p+ video on it or lots of internet use.

NO HDMI is criminal, considering phones even get that now. Same for no SD card slot :(

To be fair, most supporting tablet's tend to ship with a miniHDMI port anyway that, while useful, produces crap image quality and seems to stretch the CPU power of some mobiles.

I think the question for Google's tablet is thus whether or not its USB port will support MHL signalling, which can be converted to HDMI. Sadly nobody ever mentions this in the small print so it takes awhile before you can be sure whether or not it's included.

In terms of performance and image quality, MHL and miniHDMI are both still hindered by the phones ability, or lack thereof, to output good quality.

I still dont think its worth it and despite the opening post with the £159 price the cheapest pre-order price ive seen is £199 (unless there are different models??)

You can pretty much get all the function of this in a device half the price already.

From the link - 8GB model is £159, 16GB £199 ...

AH that explains it. Sorry Bob2002 I didnt even notice you had embedded a link... DOH!

The other thing i think this has going against it is many people now are probably going to hold off to see what Microsofts new "Surface" thing is like.

I personally may have took a punt on googles new Tablet if each model was around £50 cheaper, which would put it more in line with some of the competition you can now get.

Then again i think all this Tablet lark is just a fad trying to cash in on the Ipad and that along with Tablets in general will be killed off once prices of the Ultrabooks come down to regular laptop like prices inside of probably about 3 years.

I suspect the W8 Surface tablet is going to cost quite a lot because of Microsoft's hefty license fee.

I wouldnt be so sure, when you keep everything in house which is what they are doing with that you can keep prices down (IE you are not having to licence your OS to a third party which then produces hardware). MS hardware also has never really been massively overpriced (well not to the extent of apple).

Don't you believe it :) . Microsoft aren't known for producing budget products and I'd be very surprised if their tablet didn't enter in at least the upper-to-middle price range for tablets. Meanwhile Android tablets continue to get cheaper and Apple products seem to get more expensive.

MS hardware isnt that expensive really. Look at some of their Keyboards, Mice, and the Xbox 360. Keyboards and mice for the budget end are around the same as logitech budget end stuff price wise, higher range stuff is actually cheaper in as near as a like for like with some other well known companies in tht market. Likewise the 360 compared to say the PS3 is and always has been cheaper.

I agree with you MS are not "cheap" persay, but they are far from expensive either.

I also agree about Android products getting cheaper and cheaper and Apple stuff seems to just gets higher in price. I think thats mainly due to the market place, i may get slated by an apple fan but the Android market is IMO aimed at the more techy type that likes to tinker who knows what something should cost. Apple is aimed more at an almost cult like mentality (ill probably get it for that) and thus Apple can charge whatever they please, they could put an old 386 processor in the iphone 5 and they would still want it.

The MS surface i have no doubt wont be cheap, its probably going to fall in the middle price wise between an ipad and a good Android tablet. I agree its not going to be anywhere near the price of budget Android stuff, certainly the all singing and dancing version of MS surface wont, thats likely to have a Intel core i5 processor in it which on its own retail wise is the same as some budget end Android stuff, factor in the RAM, OS etc and it soon adds up... However if its a full functioning computer with a decent touch screen and its alot cheaper than an ipad, it has potential for success.
