Google/Sun To Announce Office Package Today

Mmm, the press releases only seem to talk about a kind of cross promotion deal between the two. Nothing about a Google branded office suite.

The video wasn't working until a couple of minutes ago, just in time to see Scott McNealy and Eric Schmidt leave the conference stage; so I'm still in the dark about what, exactly, they've announced.

EDIT: From the press release (and people who actually got a video stream) it would seem that it was almost a non-event. Oh well ...

More info -

GOOGLE HAS confirmed that it will launch free spreadsheet and word-processing software online and take on Microsoft in one of its biggest markets.

Under the deal, Google will allow web users to access Sun's OpenOffice from a toolbar.

The other day, when Sun's Scott McNealy and his former employee now Google chief Eric Schmidt met up, Sun was wary about doing that.

When asked point blank, McNealy said it was something to be investigated. However Sun's Australian spokesman Paul O'Connor was a little more forthright about the deal which he said was "huge".

He bubbled that the deal was a wake-up call for Microsoft.

"At the moment most people are used to having to pay for software packages, but at the end of the day, the value is in the content and services – not in the software itself," he said.

Thinkfree is pretty impressive for a Java app, not much different to Windows native. The only fly in the ointment was the slow download speed, if they could have started utilising my full 2Mbit (rather than a tiny fraction) it would have been even more impressive. :)

Try it again Bob - it loads much quicker next time because the java aplication is cached on your hard drive. :)

Yes, I was really thinking about first impressions. If I hadn't checked the site's download rate I might have thought there wasn't much of a future for it. :)

Looks like the final word should go to Google co-founder Sergey Brin -

Google co-founder Sergey Brin has quashed speculation that the giant ad broker is to introduce a web-based Office suite.

"We don't have any plans," he told Web 2.0 conference organizer John Battelle (pictured below). However Brin left the door open a little. Documents would be easier to work with in the future, he promised, but he didn't think a fat client was the way to go. ...

Apart from its unmatched virtual distribution network, why is it relevant whether Google are involved ot not? Anyone can download OpenOffice for free anyway, can't they?
