Googlemail and spam

Does anyone else here have any googlemail accounts and if so do you receive spam to it?

I have two accounts both have unusual addresses's and although one has not been given out both receive lots of spam!

I don't know if the fault is with google or if spammers have found a way of making hits, I would understand if the addy was a name (such as Fred) @ googlemail.com but I don't know how they 'hit' unusual names?

I would add that I used to have a huge spam problem with Hotmail but in the last 2 years I have not received any spam at all to my hotmail account. :)

I doubt it. I cant see google being that stupid, and its not as if they are struggling for cash.

With all the simply brilliant things google are coming out with - google earth, google maps, an online office suite, google books etc etc - they would not want to risk getting a bad name by giving out email addresses to spammers.

I have to point out here that Im hoping googles payment thing coming soon to the UK knocks paypal one. :D

I just checked my gmail account, and it had 380 odd spam in there. However, I cant remember when I last checked it, and it does have an extremely easy address.

My yahoo account gets spam as well, I think they all do. Having an unusal address helps, but its certainly not a definate.

Have you reported it?

How do I get rid of spam?

To remove spam from your inbox, tick the box next to the unwanted message and click Report Spam. If you discover that a message is spam once you have opened it, just click Report Spam along the top of the message to send it to the Google Mail Team.

The more spam you mark, the better our system will get at weeding out those annoying messages. If you or we should happen to make a mistake and mark a good message as spam, click Not Spam at the top of the message. You can also click Undo immediately after marking a message as spam, to remove the Spam label.

Sorry, perhaps I didn't explain properly, the spam does not arrive in my in box, it goes straight to the spam box so it 'is' recognised as spam by goggle already.

I've just checked my dad's account and he's had no spam in the past 30 days.
My account gets loads of the stuff, but very rarely does any get delievered to the inbox. Both email account names are a very easy target for spammers, as they are first.last name format and have been used before with other email services.

Maybe I emailed/invited somebody who got infected with an email address harvester, or maybe it is just chance.

A lot of email services filter out known spam sources, even when they have a spam mailbox, maybe gmail with its huge capacity doesn't

Agreed, as is the £10 discount

I wonder if Google will take on ebay next :)

If only! That would be wonderful IMHO if they did, it needs an opponent as big as Google as ebay just kills off any small outfits.

A friendly warning folks........

Google Checkout uses the same password as your gmail / googlemail account and I've heard that some poor folks are getting their gmail accounts hacked into - which would give the hacker instant buying power on your Checkout account.

Please, please make sure that your passwords are up to scratch. ;)

"Google Checkout uses the same password as your gmail / googlemail account"

Hmm, using the same password doesn't sound like a smart idea it also means they cant use the email account to warn you that a transaction has occured as a hacker could use gmail's filter to send any alert messages to the garbage folder.

Hi There

I have a googlemail address and just lately I have had up to 40+ spam mail in my spam box in one day and I have had a few get in to my main inbox as well I report them as spam & then bin them but it is a bit annoying to say the least:(

Sorry, perhaps I didn't explain properly, the spam does not arrive in my in box, it goes straight to the spam box so it 'is' recognised as spam by goggle already.

I used to be annoyed that I even got a lot of spam in my google mail spambox, as with hotmail (Windows Live Mail), I get no spam at all, apart from the odd nigeria scam email.

Now, my google mail inbox is being flooded with spam. Their other services such as maps, and calender, are excellent, most especially the ability to text important calender updates to your phone; but it seems where services are under threat from other malicious users, google cannot be relied upon.
Now paypal is already a huge target from account scammers they cannot keep at bay. What makes google any different?

I also have 2 GMail a/c's. One uses my name as username and gets all the spam as above in its 'spam box'.

The other a/c uses a password-type (nonsense) username and gets NO spam!! :D

SO, the problem lies in the name used.
