Got 3 GB connected, but very weird issue with 2.5GB ethernet download speed.

I don't really need 3 gb tbh, it's for me to fiddle about, even the 3gb downloads 1 gb speed on certain site, it wouldn't bother me, but what bugs me now is that it's actually slower download than 1 gb.
One more comment.

When I got the 3gbit I had a similar nervous breakdown...
I have private servers on some top DCs in London (no VMs or others peoples hardware...)... and for days I was looking to see if my router had some old config and limits the upload... its was poor.

Then I realise that my line wasnt the problem and that from now on... the "speed" problem is usually the other side.

Then I spent 1-2 months talking to network engineers in a very big corporate network provider in order to at least make my situation a bit better.

This is a speed test to a server in France (I found speed test around london almost meaningless, its full speed all the time)
I have a manual speed limit on my router: 2.85Gbit.

Thanks guys.

Whilst my internet is still weird. I have managed to download with full speed a few times (still inconsistent). So it’s not an issue with my gear.

I’ve also brought a new fibre cable. I seem to have more “hit” after that as well.

I don’t understand what MTU. But could it be that? As in somewhere through the path doesn’t “compatible” with my setup?

do NOT change MTU. outside your internal net is not going to be helpful.

I’ve noticed one thing. Whenever I have YouTube video playing in the background I can achieve the max speed. Then if i close the YouTube tab it reverts back to the 50mb capped speed.

That makes me think of power saving settings on the computer network adaptor (essentially having an established traffic flow keeps it alive).

The Apple Silicon laptops don't have that crap since performance is exactly the same on battery than on mains power. It's really an x86 laptops problem.

Do you have anything else in your network that is wired in at 2.5Gbps or above that you can run internal iperf tests to? This might be as simple as bad compatibility with the Apple platform, hard to tell with a sample size of one chipset.

I know, the whole thing doesn't make any sense at all..... I don't have any power saving settings, although it behaves like there is some power saving settings

It feels like there is a tunnel, if I download directly, then it will capped at around 50-80 mb, but if the tunnel is already open, I can get a full speed download.

In terms of iperf tests, I've tried between 2 of my laptops and it's fine.... No speed issues. And as mentioned, I've tried to connect to both Technicolor router and my Eero Max 7 directly just in case..... But ye, this is weird....

I think what you are experiencing is the Realtek 8156 syndrome. Google that chipset and you will find all sorts of odd behavior with these 2.5Gbps adapters. Mine is that the upload speed bounces around 100 Mbps.

I have the Anker 2.5Gbps usb c dongle

I think there is an engineering defect with these chipsets. If I plug it in, upload something I get over 2Gbps, but then once I start downloading the next upload is at 100Mbps. Bad engineering is my bet...

Moving away from Realtek for me...just need to find an Intel based chipset that is a USB C

Or move to a MacMini with 10Gbe ethernet, no more mocking aorund with stupid adapters. Mine works fine for my internal 10Gbe fibre, see below iperf test.

I think I have managed to pinpoint the issue. It's a single connection issue.

If I switch to Single on speedtest.net:
On wifi:
I get around 1500 mbps download on single connection test

On ethernet:
I get around 450 mbps download on single connection test

Same on think broadband website.... I think I need to call CF again.... Hopefully with this insight they are able to action something.

:) :) :)

Same here on the Ultra.. but its was bloody 6K!!!! :0

Alright got a 10 gbe thunderbolt adapter and the speed now is normal. So looks like the issues are with Realtek - Plugable/Belkin adapters 2.5 gbe adapters.

Thanks for anyone replied and hope this is helpful for anyone else who has the same issue.

Those adapters are a bunch of junk!

Glad you got it sorted. Buy a MacMini or MacStudio with built in 10Gbe.
