Got a NR510E and a smarty SIM - Seems like I've got a good signal but low download speeds!

Hey Guys

Hoping to pick the brains of the collective once again. I posted recently about a house move where we are going to struggle to get FTTP so I'm looking for alternatives.

See the previous thread here: https://www.ispreview.co.uk/talk/th...lose-to-o2-mast-will-there-be-problems.39793/

Having posted on this Forum I got some great advice from you guys and I've taken the plunge and got myself n NR5103E off ebay. Got myself a Smarty Unlimited SIM and I've got it all set up. Its up in the attic (highest point in the house obviously) and looking at the Cellular Data Info Page I think my numbers are pretty good? What do you guys think?

I have no 5G signal in my area - been on the Three Coverage checker and so I'm relying on 4G only. As advised on this Forum I have selected the bands to aggregate like this:

The Cell Tower closest to me is this one and it's got Three on it - I can see it from the house too - it's just up the hill - Its labelled 6692 on Cell mapper and should have Bands 1,3,20 & 28 on it

The problem is that I'm only getting about 15 - 18Mbps download speeds! Really poor! But interestingly I'm getting circa 45 - 48Mbps upload speeds.

What am I doing wrong guys?

The mast should also have B32, it won't show alongside the other bands on CellMapper as it's download only but if available it can boost speeds quite a bit.

Does Band Auto Selection just give you the bands you've manually selected?

Other locations in the property can be tried.

OK I’ll add that to the list of bands and try that. It didn’t come up I. The list in Cellular Information though

Higher UL speeds than DL speeds are usually an indication of an over-subscribed mast, however it can also be a lower speed back-haul from the mast that is being managed by applying some QoS to the connections to the mast.

Given its position elevated on the hill-side and being the only 4G site for Three in the entirety of Matlock, covering it all then I feel its more than likely to be the over-subscription situation.

Yup. You can check that out by testing early in the morning or after midnight when there will be fewer users.

The other thing I've noticed is that I get different speed results when I use the Ookla speed test app on the iPhone, and the Laptop and I get massively different results if I use it in a browser on the laptop. Is this the best tool to test speed?

You should ideally perform speed tests hard-wired to the router to avoid any variations or loss from a Wifi connection, or differences/spec from one Wifi device to another.

And usually best to confirm the hard-wired connection is running at the expected reported/speed too; ethernet cables have been known to get broken.

You say you get massively different results, but don't say which way they are massively different?!

iPhone give me the best results by far - connected at 5g to the Router
THen the App on the Laptop - 5G connected to the Router
Then the Web browser on the Laptop is all over the place!

BTW I have got mobile data switch off on the iPhone!

Talking of speed tests, I just got an update there for Ookla, better default speedometer increments now folks. (y)

Especially for those spoiled with that 5G malarky. 😊

(Yes I was cheating and using Proton VPN)😁
