GPUs back where they belong, in your gaming PC

Just in time for the release of AMD and Nvidia's new cards :)

In terms of power consumption, Bitcoin dwarfs ETH.

I guess they moved from GPUs to ASICs a long time ago though.

I admit I mined. But, with the caveats that a) I mined on excess solar power using a script and t-rex's API. b) I mined to try to reduce the crippling cost of the 3080 Ti that I bought at what is now more than the cost of a 3090.

Seems like we're going to find soon a lot of cheap used GPUs on ebay et al, according to the latest news.

Well that's good news as I use my Windows box for post processing in Abobe Lightroom and Photoshop. I could really do with a much better GPU than the one that came with the PC.

From the reviews I've seen, they use less power than a 3090ti. And if you undervolt (or whatever the GPU equivalent is), you can drop the power by 100w and keep like 95% of the performance!

Nvidia developed a very efficient architecture, and decided to boost it way past it's peak efficiency!

undervolting cards is really something consumers shouldn't have to do though. Of course gamers, overclocking enthusiasts, miners do it, but I wouldn't have to expect consumers to. As you probably know if you've tried it, there's a very thin line between what the card will work at and what causes instabilities.

If I were buying a consumer top of the range card, i'd expect it to just work.

It will work, and at the same power level as its predecessor.

The rumours of power usage were greatly blown out of proportion, at least for the 4090. Will we see a 4090Ti, or Titan since it's rumoured they're bringing it back, with a 600W power limit in the future, quite possibly.
I guess it'll depend on what AMD brings to the table!

As someone who primarily uses a laptop, the efficiency gains of Ada look really promising!

Honestly, I'd love to know how/when gaming became a ridiculously expensive hobby? I mean, I bet fishing is cheaper these days!
