Greater upload than Download Speeds?

Hi there,

This is my first post. I hope someone can explain.

I have a VW Campervan and opted for a LTE to WLAN router fitted from factory. This is a Lesswire Wi4U.
It has really worked very well all over the UK, But just recently the upload speed is greater than the download speed. like eg Download 9.83 and upload of 14.8.

Thats ok when the download is no lower but when that drops to say 4.00 download it’s a problem when streaming.

I’m with Vodafone data only sim and totally unrestricted and fastest speed available.

Hopefully somebody can shed some light on this problem.

Thanks in advance.

This sounds like you are connecting to a mast that lots of other devices are also connecting to. There is a limited amount of data that the mast can process so if there are lots of users this is shared between them. The end result is you get a smaller slice of the pie.

The same thing can happen with upload but there are likely much fewer devices uploading lots of data at the same time. It is more common that devices are downloading (streaming, pictures on social media etc.) so download suffers more.

Thanks both for your advice however I forgot to mention that the readings are normal when I do a speed test from exactly the same location on my IPhone ie greater download than upload.

It looks like the Lesswire Wi4U is only CAT3 whereas your iPhone will be closer to CAT20 in all probability.

Sorry not sure what that means. It dose have a internal roof antenna and a grp roof. Connected via farka end plugs.

The CAT level refers to the type of connection the 4G can handle, the bigger the number the more potential for the speeds.

Well it’s an education thanks for the link, looks like I ordered ancient history technology, well it worked really well until now. Maybe turn it of then on again and it will work perfectl!!!

TBH it sounds like congestion on your local mast, have you tested in other areas where you know you used to get a better speed?

Maybe it is congestion on one particular band that one device uses that isn't so noticeable on another device that can use other bands or carrier aggregation to improve speeds.

A cat 4 router might only be using, say, band 20 and then a newer, higher 'cat' router might be combining Band 20 and 3 or similar.

Not all routers/mobile devices are equal. A newer iPhone or Android device often outperforms an old (low-cat) router even with an outdoor antenna on the router ...

CATegory is king.
