HALF-LIFE 2 Getting Closer?

I heard during mid-last week that Valve (HL2 developers) had managed to get the first release candidate off to the publisher for extended testing.

I've no idea whether it's passed, although I know that Doom3 was on the shelves not a week after that went GOLD and HL2 will also be downloadable online.

It's annoying that the game code got stolen a while back, I must admit, I kinda have been losing interest each day. They have taken so long. Mark J a good game I would recommend is The Sims 2! :)

Problem is, I'm still working on my PC to make it work :(

Ive been moping about the HL2 forums boards, which isnt fun, as most there are spotty annoying kids posting the same over and over.

But yes, the RC has been sent off, and the general opinion of those boards is that it will pass first time.

However, vivendi say that games very rarely pass first time. The pros are that HL2 would be very worked upon to ensure theres no bugs, it being the biggest game release this year. On the other hand, its bound to be very big and capable of hiding all sorts of bugs.

Either way, it could be soon or after christmas its released, no-one knows for sure.

I have ordered the sims2 and its on its way. Birthday pressie for the mrs. Should keep her quiet for a few weeks.

Did a quick search, but the net is playing up today, or more likely our work connection. Still, it seems like the only thing you can get it for is the PC, but I would have thought the PS2 as well.

I don't know if it's just been renamed or what, but there is a new Sims game coming out (in a little while) for the Xbox - the Urbz

Personally, I'm looking forward to Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. Due out on more-or-less the same day as my son.

Seems like I have been waiting forever for HL2.

I'm trying to justify spending almost £30 on Doom3, a game I must play, it's just that £30 is still a lot of cash for a game.

Also waiting for the Total War: Rome game to come out, as I am a fan of that series. (Shogun/ Medievel) and I guess thats another wodge of dosh I shall have to convince myself to pay out.

Talking of bugs, I'm sure there will be plenty of patches for HL2 /Rome. Any released for Doom3?

Will Doom3 play on Win200 pro? Will any of them play on Win2000 pro?

I'd go against Doom 3 unless you like that sort of thing.

After playing it I felt I wasted my money. Too dark, and too much of the same, when you go into a dark bit a scary monster jumps out, gets old after a while.

And no real multiplayer to speak of.

Oh, and by the way, sims 2 is the best game out. Brilliant. Havent played it myself, but its kept the other half very quiet for over 3 nights.

It's just your graphics card that'll need to be up to scratch for Doom3,

I have a Geforce FX5900 card with 128MB, will that be enough with a XP3000?

Thanks for the link.

I have heard mixed reviews of Doom, mentioning its retro gameplay, which is why I don't feel like paying a large sum of money for it. I actually loved the previous Doom and Quake, but I guess I have moved on from that level of gameplay. I may wait a while longer...

Hmm. Was it stolen?

or

Did Valve tell us and tell Vivendi (their publishers) this so that they could have more time to develop Steam? With Steam now fully operational to distibute HL2 to most customers who want it, Valve can now do this and not have to pay Vivendi any money for it. If HL2 had been completed on time, Steam would not have been ready to distribute it as a chargeable full game and Valve couldnt have made any direct cash from sales, they would only get their cut from VUG.

Less of a conspiracy theory, more of a blantantly obvious fact.

Convieneint wasnt it?

Making a world class game, and they not only have lax security, but have it on a network connected to the internet. Either the height of stupidity, or done on purpose.

Well, the code I saw looked rater genuine to me...

So, its either a deliberate slip-up, sabotaged code to throw us off the scent, a complete cover-up, or it might be true

You can run Doom3 with that, although you'll probably need to cut some of the glossy options, but it should still run ok and look good. However the FX5900 series was never a very good chipset, much like the 5800 before it.

Doom3 as a game isn't too bad, it starts off quite well, then the gameplay gets a little tedius for the next two hours, but after that the atmosphere and overall presentation seems to get better. In the end it does such a good job with the atmosphere that you no longer notice its flaws.

On top of all that it last a LONG time, the first FPS I've seen to have so many levels of gameplay in many many years.

The HL2 code theft was real because you could actually get the FBI to comment on it, unless valve bribed them with early copies of the game! :D

Currently HL2 is done and in Release Candidate 1 stage, the problem right now is a legal dispute with the publisher and that has the potential to delay its delivery by several months.

Valve is known to have stated that it'll put HL2 out over Steam, at least, no matter what Vivendi try to do. Expected release is within a two or three weeks - early/mid-October. Some are now pointing towards early November though.

Its going to be interesting if that happens, as part of the argument is that Valve agreed they would never use an online distrabution system. Lo and behold, steam came up.

Hopefully its released before christmas, if not a lot of sales are going to be lost.
