Have I got a virus?

Hello all, I was browsing the net with Internet Explorer, Limewire was also running. I only have that configured to share fromm audio folder. ANyway, a pop up advertisement window appeared, which I closed by clicking on it on the toolbar below (i didnt actually click on the ad). Seemingly, when I did this a dialogue box appeared saying "preparing to install microsoft Word 2000". I clicked on cancel (it was a cancel button and not one of those pretend ads that look like an error message etc), but when I did this the box came up saying "Windows cannot find the file(s) to install this program. please insert the Windows cd rom in the drive". SO I clicked on cancel again, and had to do this about 5 times before it went away. Thing is, I already have Word 2000 installed on my pc (windows xp), and its working perfectly well, so what was going on here? Just ran ad-aware and avg but they didnt show anything up...

The Windows Installer sometimes goes mad and when loading / doing a function in Internet Explorer can cause it to ask for Office, Norton etc.. installation media.

Try removing Office (as long as you do have the disks so you can put it back on) and see if you get the same "give me files" message.

Other than that it might also be worth putting on spybot search and destroy (www.download.com --> search for spybot) and do not use norton anti-virus :) get something like nod32 if you are willing to pay or AVG if you want free (http://free.grisoft.com).

Hope this helps.

It does, but a _LOT_ of spyware now has soo many ways of getting around it and putting themselves back it often fails :(

Same with Spybot S&D, but scanning with both is a good idea.
I regularly have to clean friends computers using manual methods, TDS-3 and other things :(

Hijack-This is also a good tool.

Could you give more information about the items you mentioned in your previous post about Hijack and TDS-3? What are they? If they are programs where can we get them?

I get asked from time to time about problems with peoples computers and whilst nowhere near an expert, tend to push them towards Adaware and a good virus checker.

Anything you can advise other people will help I am sure.

Thanks.

TDS-3 has been discontinued - It was a powerful trojan remover but mainly the work had to be done manually, so you couldnt go "scan --> clean" etc..
Requires a fair bit of skill in working out what should and should not be in startup, running processes etc..

Hijack-This from http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/downloads.html (see roughly in the middle of the page) lets you see what your search urls are set to, what addins are loaded etc.. a bit like a cross with TDS-3 and Spybot.
Tick the entries you want to remove / set back to default and click Fix.

I fix junked up computers for a living and still some of the little buggers get past me :p
In rare cases its just an entirely better idea to back everything up, reinstall and put documents, favs, emails etc.. back :)

See what "abnormal" things are obvious in Hijack-This.

Good luck :)

if you tick the entries which run them :)

BT Modem lock might be a better idea to remove via add / remove programs.
