have to reset dlink dsl-G604T - is this normal?

I have had the above router for about a week but have only been using it properly for the last 3 days. 3 times in that period I have had to re-set the router from the tools/system commands section because I suddenly lose access to websites. The browser(s) says 'page can't be found'. Is it normal to have to do this or does it indicate a fault with the router?
I have had no problems losing sync, btw.

Hi Flashlight,

I have this router and if you dont have the latest firmware youw ill have problems with it passing over DNS its not that you cant get to websites the router isnt telling your computer(s) where to go to find them, find out the DNS addresses and assign them staticly if you need any help doin this let me know.

i have this router but the firmware at dlink.co.uk is the same thats on the router when it arrived, is that the latest?

I had the same problem with my 504-T.. When I phoned the helpline number a very helpful man gave me an IP of a DNS server to use.
Looking back he never did explain why I was having problems...But they sure went away!

Try using a direct link to a DNS server rather than just leaving it blank as it is now..

More than likely it will be but I dont have my router here at the moment so I cant check, when it is the latest one it gives you a option for DNS under the setup menu.

Man of Means, do you remember when you helped me try and fix this router over msn, and we tried remote desktop through dial up?
That time it was the 604GT version, which was very similar if I remember, but had an upgraded firmware.

Well, If you rememeber, I had to return it, after is worked well for a week, then simply would not pick up a connection, or eventually got a connection, but pages would not load properly etc.

I returned it for a Netgear DG834GT, and have never had a problem *touch wood*.

D-Link is good if youre a hardware techie, used to encountering problems, or ENOJY encountering problems, but as something you want to leave and forget, I dont think you will get much of that here.

yeh i have the latest

This is the router I use, and I had a similar problem to begin with.

I ended up setting the DNS servers into each PC's network config rather then leaving it to router and its worked without a hitch since (almost 2 years).

On a side note, I did try to update the firmwear about a year ago, but it just wouldnt update, It would "say" it had but no matter what I did, it would always default to original version. In the end I gave up

Yeah I remember that Darkspark, the one problem with the router is that it doesnt pass the DNS over if you assign one of your ISP's DNS servers manually it has one of the best modems in I have ever used and it is ment to be able to do 2+ aswell which I'm hoping to try on it soon.

Just out of interest DarkSpark have you moved over to MaxDSL yet or are you on a fixed rate IPstream?

I dont know what they are :D
Well, Im on ukonlines 2mb LLU product.
I dont think they have maxDSL,unless youre refering to their 22mb product.
So Im just guessing that Im on the fixed rate IPstream.

About the DNS settings, you may be right, but with this netgear, I dont need to specify DNS servers like I had to with the D-Link.

I hope they upgrade me to 8mb sooon for free. Its bound to happen, with all the other ISPs upgrading their users to 8mb as default.

For an 8mb product, the zen 8000 active looks good, but the usage just doesnt work for me. I use that much in a week (3 networked computers).

With you being on LLU it cuts out BT alltogether so you wont be on a MaxDSL product, the 22meg is ADSL2+ which unless your within 2km of cabling to the exchange (about 30db with a decent SNR) you wont see much benifit from 2+, I do have a bad line though and it wont take over 4 meg but I can get 5.5 meg on normal ADSL.

The DNS problem with the dlink 604T is proven in my view but easy to work around, the netgears aint bad apart from the DG834GT which doesnt like MaxDSL at all it will cause you all sorts of sync speed and intermittent problems.

Ukonline already have a 8 meg product so you may have to upgrade before you get it unless you want to wait for the market to move on, IMO theres a need for a fixed rate higher speed product like 4 meg or 6 meg but BT wont give it Ukonline and other LLU providers can.

I am on Zen's LLU on a MaxDSL 8000 pro 50gig product and I have been able too ask for a sync speed so my line is stable and its changed within a few mins of asking for it when I have needed to ask.

The big problem for me is the news servers and that I am trying to resist from setting off all the downloads I can from them:P

Well the exchange is pratically down the road from me. I know Im well below 1.2km away from it.
The upgrade screen for 22mb says I can expect to receive 16.5mb from it, which may actually be somewhat higher or lower depending on the phone line quality.

Connection Speed down:2336 kbps up:288 kbps
Line Attenuation down:34.0 db up:16.5 db
Noise Margin down:28.1 db up:30.0 db

did anyone manage to get mrtg/prtg to work with this router?
