Have you tried a vOIP company ? - List them and reviews here

Ok i thought we could start a thread listing vOIP companies that we have tried and tested and then add a few comments on reliablity, costs etc.

There is an increasing amount of providers and prices vary quite a bit.

Try to keep it in the same format so use my 1st as a template:

I suspect they are the same people as www.voipstunt.com too. They are very good their prices are excellent and cheaper than Skype.
If you credit 10 Euros to your account you get 3 months free landline calls to loads of countries. Their cost for calling mobiles any where in the world is also cheaper than Skype.

I use both Skype and VOIPStunt and find the sound quality better on VOIPStunt. Since Skype decided to increase their customer base the sound quality has been punished. If you use their software on a computer it also makes your computer a SuperNode which some ISPs are now bitching about. I don't know if VOIPStunt does the same though.

I've used Skype (and will do again, once my broadband is up and running again)

I used it to call home from Japan for pennies (using my mobile would probably have bankrupted me).

I went to Japan in Feb, bought roughly £15 worth of credit whilst over there, and still have most of it left.

Voicehost.co.uk

If you are looking for a good voip provider, try voicehost.co.uk they are very good with no monthly fees, calls are great and support is out of this world.

Give them a try :smilet:

Now, let me see....

A five minute daytime call to an ordinary geographic number. A bargain 1.3p per minute, so that's 6.5p.
Oh, hang on, what's this in the T&C?
"3.3 Fees are quoted VoiceHost limited (whether in the Price List or otherwise) exclusive of Value Added Tax."
OK then - make that 7.64p.
Or I could use the ordinary phone, with any of the "1899, 18185, 18866" group and pay just 5p even if the call goes on for longer than expected, because they work on a per call basis, not a per minute basis.

Let's try another - what if I need to phone those jokers at the electric company yet again to point out that they still have the wrong meter number, on their 0845 number.
Peak rate - 6p per minute.
(Or, as the author of their site evidently never saw the inside of a school, "peek" rate according to the little box where you stick the number in to find out)
Plus the VAT, of course, so that's 7.05p.
Hmm, I haven't checked recently, but I seem to recall that BT peak rate for an 0845 number is only 3p a minute, isn't it? It's certainly nothing like as much as these people want.

Yeah, right, I'll sign up right away.

Edit:
"the little box where you stick the number in to find out" is, of course, my description.
The relevant bit on the site actually says "enter the full telephone number into our call cost calculator above"
Which you may find difficult, because it isn't above, it's below. :D

Im with Voicehost, and i must say the call quality is very good and the support is good as well. You get what you pay for.:smilet:

Skype, and free to fellow skype users, which is why I got it; AND it include video calls for free to other skype users.
All I have to do now is ensure I am not naked when making or receiving a call.

Looking for a reasonably priced, reliable VOIP services to be used for 'work from home' option occassionally. Currently am subscribed to a local provider, however, service quality often poor. How about PC phone.

I'd still go with Skype to start with.

I'm using 12voip from Betamax. Good sound quality and low prices. Excellent.

Which. What and Why?

I think it all depends on how you are going to use it. If it's just to get a seperate number from your home phone to receive calls then price range between £2 - £4 a month excluding hardware and setup cost if any. (most setups are free and you pay for calls at a low rate outbound)

But that gives you any GEO telephone number and a line!

If your wanting more user on the line or number it may shift up to £6 - £8 a month but you can have many people answering the same number in many locations.

If you are wanting to use it to call out to land lines a lot then £15 + for an unlimited call use to landlines only mobiles, etc can expect to pay 7p - 11p a minute for.

One thing I would say is call the companies up before you sign up (are their support lines 0870 - 0845?, do they answer fast, are they based in the UK and do they sound willing to help?

It's ok payiong £3 per month for a line buit if problems hit and the number you've advetised now doesn't work the last thing you want is a company that isn't able, wanting or willing to help.

Does it matter if you are talking to friends?
