Help -ADSL Connection Sharing

Hi

I have just bought a USR 9105 ADSL modem & 4 port router & set it up on my desktop no problems at all, despite being a bit green!
The problem I do have (and not a clue as there are no instructions at all) is with connecting the router to my laptop (W2000) to share the ADSL. I have assumed that the physical connection would be with an ethernet cable as per the desktop.
The little green light on the USR shows as on for the laptop and an icon shows on the screen showing the LAN is connected. This is where I hit a full stop as there is no connection to the internet or email.
Sorry if this maybe a bit basic but some help would be great!!

Basically, you need to set the laptop up to use suitable settings to talk to the router.
These will be similar to the ones on your desktop (assuming your desktop is connecting correctly).

1st of all, check the net settings on your desktop:

Control Panel - Network - Rightclick on Local Area Connection - Properties
Select TCP/IP from the lower box and click on properties.

1)

If 'Obtain an IP address automatically' and 'Obtain DNS automatically' are selected - do the same on your laptop - this means that the router will tell the laptop what settings to use (as it is for the desktop). I'm not sure if you will have to restart the laptop if you do need to change this, so if it doesn't work immediately, try doing so.

2)

If they are not selected, and the IP address boxes (and the rest) have numbers in them, you need to use similar settings on your laptop. The only different one should be the IP address, which must NOT be the same as your PC one, as this is a unique identifier for each computer on the network. If, for example, your desktop has an IP of 192.168.1.2, set the laptop one to be 192.168.1.3.

The rest of the settings (subnet mask, default gateway, DNS servers) should be the same as the desktop (again, I am assuming that your desktop is connecting through the router correctly).

----

Another possibility may be that there is a fault in the cable (it's unlikely, but possible), or you may be using the wrong type - if it has 'crossover' written on it, then it is the wrong type.

To check this, try using the cable you are using for the destop with the laptop and seeing if it can then connect.

I hope this helps
