HELP! Just activated with Virgin Media 8mbs - pathetic speeds

 It seems yet another dissappointed customer from this company that I thought you could trust! Just been activated with Virgin Media and am getting really slow speeds

DSL connection rate: 448 kbps(UP-STREAM) 768 kbps(DOWN-STREAM)
Actual IP throughput achieved during the test was - 213 kbps

This is on a line that is supposed to be able to achieve 4.5mbs. Virgin are fobbing me off with the line 'you are in the testing period please wait 7-10 days for the line to stabilise as there will be wild fluctuations'. Well its been 3 days and I'm still waiting if anything the speed goes down in the evenings to a crawl and have never had anything above . It seems I am far from being the only one

http://www.broadbandgenie.co.uk/broadband/Virgin+Media+broadband

I cannot have an slow service provider as I work on the web I came to Virgin in good faith but its just not happening. Anyone know of the best way of cancelling as I have only been with them for 10 days? Does the 14 day standard 'cooling off' period apply?

They are NOT 'fobbing you off"
Have a little bit of patience and wait for the training period to finish before complaining..DON'T SWITCH YOUR MODEM/ROUTER OFF AT ALL (unless absolutely neccessary either.
Also if your work/livelihood depends on fast web access you really shouldn't be using a home user connection but rather a business one instead. A so-called 'guaranteed rate' subscription would be the WTG :smilet:

Post some line stats will give u more of a idea but from that speedtest your only in sync at 800 down and the BRAS profile is prob set to 250 because your line is intermittent.

Can you post full line stats, ie downstream noise margin and attenuation?

As Tracker says, you are not being fobbed off, the connection speed between you and the exchange (768k) is nothing to do with Virgin. I take it the 4.5Mbps figure comes from the BT checker? That is only ever an estimate. Post your figures and we can give you an idea of what you should be able to achieve.

Hi chassa

Looking at the speed test you are missing the important line above which says what your profile is set to.

1. Your sync rate is only 768 kbps(DOWN-STREAM) this is controlled by your equipment, condition of your internat wiring and condition plus distance to the exchange. If your speed test had looked like the one below then yes I would say Virgin had a problem see how much higher the sync rate is.

Test1 comprises of Best Effort Test: -provides background information.
IP profile for your line is - 3000 kbps
DSL connection rate: 448 kbps(UP-STREAM) 3808 kbps(DOWN-STREAM)
Actual IP throughput achieved during the test was - 291 kbps

Can you complete two speed tests one from where you have the modem router normally and the second from the test socket on BT's master you will find it behind the faceplate. the second one needs all other equipment and wiring removed just the modem.

Also can you post your router make/model plus line stats as this all helps to show the condition of your line.
Then we can see where the problem lies and help you sort it out.

any suggestions as to a good, reliable business broadband performer?

Your line's DS attenuation is very high which usually indicates a very long line (unless there is a line fault somewhere), I think 63dB is the highest attenuation value reported by the dg834g, so it may even be worse :( Also your line's noise margin is quite poor.

You can check the straight line distance to your exchange by putting your postcode in here http://www.samknows.com/broadband/checker2.php and selecting the "BT ADSL" option on the results page. (the actual length of cable run may be substantially longer).

I would suggest plugging the router in the test socket behind the removeable lower panel on the master socket for a while and checking your stats to see if the sync rate has improved (with the front plate removed all telephone extensions will be disconnected - if they are wired correctly) see photo here:- http://www.ispreview.co.uk/articles/adsltips/01.shtml

virgin suck. i only just joined them, about a month now and speeds are bad, ranging most days from 232kbps to 1.3mb, so am in middle of writing offical complaint to virgin head office, before i go to OFCOM in an attempt to get out of this contract, as they not giving me what they promised. one day i hit a speed of 6mb for bout an hour, cant play xbox online as always booted for lagging badly, surfin is sooo slow. tech support is run by bunch of idiots they blame everything except themselves.
all the isp i been with virgin are by far worse, never had one prob b4 until i joined virgin

anyone know which area covers isp, like sale of goods covers items, what covers isp's??

Have heard so much bad stuff about Virgin speed throttling and general poor performance that I have got my MAC code off them and am going with Titanadsl who were really helpful and said from there information I should be able to get 4-6 mb still ridiculous speeds from Virgin - lucky to get 800kb. Thank you for your link Mel - I tried it and is gave me a distance of 2.7 km in a straight line. The trouble is I don't think it is a straight line far from it.
