Help needed - Wiring RJ11 or RJ14 causing confusion!?!

Hi,

I really need some help with the following...

BT came round the other day and put in a new phone line as the old one wasn't working for some reason. When the guy was round I got him to wire in another cable into the extension plate on the linebox. I've now run the cable under the floor, into the cellar and back up into the lounge. I'm trying to put on a RJ11/RJ14 connector so that I can plug it into my wireless router, but don't know what wires go into what connectors. The colours I have are blue, orange, green and brown. Like I say, I really don't know what wires go into the 2, 3, 4 and 5 slots.

Can someone please help me as I'm totally lost with this!

Just be careful because those little wires can be very fiddly.

generally the Orange and Green are Tip and Ring. (i.e the phone line) on older installations - for newer wiring see below

An RJ-11 is basicall a condensed version of an RJ45 (Cat 5) cannector.

The centre pair is always reserved for Telco use for line 1 if being used in a POTS environment.

so the answer to your question is use the centre pair.

If you are going to be wiring with a Cat5 twisted pair cable then use the Blue - Blue/white pair for line 1
Then the orange pair for line 2.
