help on monitoring handshake (Freeserve/Wanadoo)

I have real problems  connecting with 56K dialup (Anytime). I have repeatedly asked my ISP to monitor the handshake and tell me what is wrong. They have moved their support to India however and in addition to the language problems they do not seem to have the ability to do more than offer a new phone number to dial.

Is there a site that lets you listen to a proper connection (audio) explaining the different bursts and what they mean. For example how long should a handshake take? Who's is the first burst - the PC? The second is who's?

It seems such a simple way to diagnose connection problems but who offers it?

I have just come through a 24 hour period of no connection. It is apparently over but I have no idea why it happened!

There should be an option somewhere (OS dependent) which allows the modem to record a log file. This should contain the relevant details.

I suggest setting up a local rate (0845) account with another ISP, so you can check if everything is working your end and your line is ok when you next have trouble with your normal ISP. Watch you don't dial this by accident though instead of your normal ISP :o .

If neither work it could be a problem with you line. Mine sometimes suffers from severe line noise which can last minutes or sometimes all day.

If you are a windows 98 user and get invalid / user password this can sometimes be caused by buggy software corrupting memory - cured by a reboot (although it is more commonly that the ISP is busy).

I would also enable modem logging see:-

If you are a windows 98 user it is possible to use ethereal (a free packet sniffer) to monitor the traffic between your ISP and computer as they establish a link and authenticate your password (this occurs after the screeching stops). This is fairly technical and unfortunately the driver it uses (winPcap 3.1 beta) will only capture on XP after it has been allocated an IP address - there may be another free sniffer for XP that could do this.
