Help picking a CityFibre ISP

Definitely worth waiting on Amazon as they're usually reduced a fair bit. The other option which can be a bit of a gamble is CEX, they have them for £40:

I bought a grade A one from my local store where I could check it first and it appears completely unused and works fine with my setup. From what I've seen of reviews there's a number of people dumping ISP locked Eeros to Cex which are no use I believe although it's a while since I looked into it.

I have read numerous stories of people buying cheap ones from CEX and they turn out to be TalkTalk branded, and then at some random time later, weeks or months, they are remotely disabled.

It looks like the eero Pro 6 has been reduced as low as £98 in the past. If it drops below £130ish, I'll likely get one.

I only bought mine as I could check it first but thought it worth mentioning to make you aware of it plus the saving isn't as large as it used to be.

Hi all. I’m going round in circles picking an ISP to use with a CityFibre connection.

I can choose from Vodafone, TalkTalk, Giganet, Brawband and Brillband.

It seems like some ISPs use “CGNAT” (still learning what everything means!) which seems to be bad for online gaming and connecting to home network from outside. I’d like to prioritise latency (even over speed) for some gaming and working from home using Remote Desktop.

Does anyone have any thoughts on who to go with? I’m leaning towards Vodafone as it looks like their Pro tier gives decent equipment, and they’re a well known company, even if that means CS is bad.
Hi! I just joined this forum and yours was the first post to catch my eye.

I have been looking for a good alternative to Vodafone/CityFibre having got tired of their variable latency. So, I visited City Fibre's web site and entered my postcode to discover available ISPs. Out of the 12 results of ISPs that use City Fibre I found that FACTCO offered the best package for the best price. For£29.99 a month I get a symmetrical 1Gb. For an extra £5.00 I got two static IPs (IPv4 and IPv6). FACTCO use City Fibre's local network and their future-proofed national network, so none of that nonsense with switching BNGs you get from Vodafone.

I get an average 6ms pinging Cloudflare and BBC.co.uk. Speeds are always >910Mb, usually nearer 940Mb. My Thinkbroadband BQM is as smooth as the Wembley pitch. You can use your own router if you wish.

I've just been having some fun with Eero devices and was thinking of your post as you're definitely correct to be wary of second hand Eeros.

I had a nightmare setting up an Eero for someone recently because something had gone wrong with it during the set up process so the Eero app didn't think they had an Eero network but the Eero device did think it was part of the network. The hard reset process didn't work even when connected to an active internet connection as some posts have said should work. In the end I put one of my Eeros onto an old ADSL connection to bring it online so I could remove it from my Eero network then my brother could add it to his Eero network, that got him past the startup screen so he could see his own Eero router so we put it on the ADSL connection, that seemed to sort it out so we could then move it back to the ONT and it was all finally working.

Sounds like you're on to a winner with that!

I've been very happy with TalkTalk through CityFibre. Absolutely every time I have run a speed test while wired I get 940/940 down/up.

My ping times are a few ms higher than yours, and at first that annoyed me while I was constantly testing it, but in day to day use, it really hasn't bothered me at all.

Is there anyway to easily see decipher trace routes to work out where my signal is coming from?

Sounds like the expected fun and games!

I bought a second 6 Pro, and even just fairly haphazardly plopping it in the middle of the hallways using wireless backhaul from the gateway has really sorted out the signal blackspot in the house. I could get more speed out of it if I wired it in, but it was really just so phones and tablets could get signal in those rooms, so the 500-600mbps I'm now getting is more than plenty.

Great that you get consistently high up and downstream. Regarding latency, even if you are a gamer latency between 10ms and 20ms shouldn't inhibit play if you are using UK and European game servers. <10ms is best though.

When I was with Vodafone/CityFibre it was possible to find what BNG (Broadband Network Gateway) you were on. I have a list of BNG IPs for Vodafone to match with the first step after your router. I am in Coventry, but my most recent BNG was Edinburgh, hence my high latency.!

VODAFONE broadband BNGs

90.247.64.1 Watford

84.65.0.1 Bracknell

84.65.192.1 Birmingham

90.247.191.1 Swindon

90.247.128.1 Edinburgh

84.65.128.1 Manchester

84.65.64.1 Surrey datacentre

90.246.0.1 Leeds

90.247.192.1 Swindon

I don't have a similar list for City Fibre's national network. I assume they have regional points where their local network connects with their national network, but I have no idea where. One would hope that we connect at the nearest point to our location or our ISP's server.

Here's my step 2.

6 ms 6 ms 5 ms 91-237-197-171.reverse.ip.cadencenetworks.net [91.237.197.171]

Cadence = FACTCO. The geolocation for 91.237.197.171 is near Lambeth, but that doesn't necessarily mean that is really where I connect to the national network.
