I need a low powered small computer case with 4 HDD drive bays.

I'm thinking to go with some Atom motherboard which should have 4 SATA connection. It's proving to be difficult. I dont want to spend a lot as well.

any idea

it would likely be easier to help if you give a price range, as you might not need to build a server as there are other methods, it would be easier to give you the easiest idea based upon a general spend estimate.

Before I start... will echo timeless on the cost thing as difficult to spec without price.

That said...

Chenbro ES34069 Mini Home Server Case
Asus AT3IONT-I, Nvidia ION, Atom 330 CPU, 2DDR3, DSUB HDMI, PCI-Ex16, Mini ITX
-alternate- Jetway NC63-LF Mini ITX ION N330 Motherboard using DDR2 ram which is probs cheaper.

The Chenbro case has 4 hot swap HDD bays which you want.
both these boards have 4 SATA and both should be RAID.

Add memory, HDDs and OS and you should be there. Even a slimline optical drive if you so desire.

Just dunno if it's too dear? (didn't try to find best prices either!)

May be possible to build a crappy microATX box that would do same job cheaper?

yea It's bit over my budget but a perfect kit though. Thing is if I have to spend £400 on this kit I could just get the HP home server.

I wanted spend about £250 (excluding the HDD drives). I have technet plus subscription so software is free. just the case and atom MB

tbh maybe its worth thinking about how they will be used, if you already have the drives maybe you could cut costs by using external caddies which will take costs to between £40/50 plus they are pretty moveable if you wanna travel with data.

Just a small suggestion but you can also buy MiniITX form factor boards that support more powerful CPU's, such as Intel's Dual and Quad Core chips (not sure about the newer i series CPU's though). Granted it will pump your budget up but then you would also get quite a powerful setup in return.

Also the Atom's with Nvidia's ION platform built-in are quite effective.

yea but I'm thinking of the electric bill as well, I need some thing just serve files. I guess I can't get this for the price I'm willing to put

for two bays its not exactly cheap imho.

Why not get a NAS (Network Attached Storage)?

Here's an example http://www.amazon.co.uk/Netgear-Sto...1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1280319934&sr=1-1

Comes with 1TB and goes on the network... very easy, and much cheaper!

I have NAS box already but I have to manually do the backup and no itunes interrogation etc.

I'm going to wait for the next ver of home server to come our and buy the HP box. How ever I look it it's going to cost me around £600+ to make it (including the drives) might as well get it from OEM so I'll have warranty etc

You want something like this then ... http://www.hp.com/united-states/campaigns/mediasmart-server/index.html ... but I have seen some NAS' that automatically backup files - there may even be a piece of free software that will let you do it with your current one...
