High DSL speed but slow download speed with fast.co.uk

Just changed over to fast.co.uk from Talktalk and my speeds are slower with lower download limits :(. Customer support cannot be faulted though because there is always someone there to quickly return my emails. After doing umpteen number of bt speed tests my download speed is about 5000Kbps with ip profile speed of 12913 Kbps and DSL speed of 14636Kbps. My predicted average speed is supposed to be 10Mbps- 14Mbps... where the heck has all my speed lost to????? I am fitted with an i-plate and these tests were performed cabled and all other equipment using wifi turned off.

Operation Mode ADSL2+
Bandwidth Down/Up(kbps) 14152 / 448
SNR Margin Down/Up(dB) 6.3 / 22.8
Attenuation Down/Up(dB) 29.0 / 19.1
Power Down/Up(dBm) 19.3 / 11.3

Fast.co.uk have offered to send in a BT engineer to have a look but if there is not a fault then i am going to face a 160 pound fee plus vat!!! They also think 4000 Kbps - 21000Kbps is an acceptable range. According to http://www.kitz.co.uk/adsl/max_speed_calc.php My line length is approx 2.1km away from the exchange.

What do you guys think???

I dont see what is supposed to be wrong??? (Unless im missing something it is late/early hours)
Wouldn't listen too much to the BT speed checker.

What do you get when downloading a large file from a known good source???

Would be very odd for you to have various stats (including the modem) reporting around 10-13(ISH)Mb and it only be going a around 5Mb.

Firstly, have you only just moved? If you've been on their service for less than 10 days then, depending upon the package, your line could still be in the 'training' period and might not have settled.

Also you need to run other speedtests, don't just rely upon BT's dubious service, and do them at different times of day (both peak and off-peak). Try our FLASH and JAVA based tests during the daytime period to see what you get and or do a download from Microsoft's site.

Otherwise I can't see any glaringly obvious problems with your line stats, which all look pretty good, so something is definitely amiss if you're not getting closer to or more than 10Mbps. What real-speeds did you get with TalkTalk before?

I moved over to fast.co.uk in November and im constantly getting 3-6Mbps as my download speed. Tried phoning customer service many times and sending them speed test results and we both agree that these speeds are unacceptable.

With Talktalk i was getting speeds varying from 5-9Mbps.

Ive even tried switching modems and the speeds are exactly the same.

Results from linked speed tester:

Detailed Results
Date 05/01/12 08:37:32
Download speed 4631.70 Kbps (4.52 Mbps)
Upload speed 376.46 Kbps (0.37 Mbps)
Server Port 8095 (tcp)

I play a lot of games online and the lag i get is unplayable at times :-(

If this is a recent loss, it could be related to some BT issues that appear to be affecting many ISPs leading to slow throughput and packet loss.

Matt

Are you running these speed tests over wireless?

Gaming lag is likely more down to latency (whats your ping time to the gaming servers?) and nothing to do with you only getting 5(ISH)Mb, plenty game online just fine with 5Mb.

Speeds are from wired connection and ive had slow speeds since i joined fast.co.uk in November 2011. I dont know what the ping is from my ps3 but i think it's less than 50ms.

Well I suppose it could be an issue with BT's kit although I'm starting to learn more towards it being a lack of local VP capacity or some related issue with Fast.co.uk's network supplier for your package. Your line can clearly handle a lot more than it's able to receive and the drop from TalkTalk is quite sharp.

Hi,

I believe I've been speaking to you about this case, and my advice is as before - if you are happy with your setup there (which I believe you are from your e-mails) the next step is to accept the engineer visit being offered by BT Wholesale so that we can get the issue you have dealt with :)

If you've still got concerns feel free to call or e-mail in as normal.

This is our thought as well, and appears to be shared by BTW who have quickly offered an engineer to investigate having decided upon this route before passing to complex faults - just a case of hoping the OP accepts so the issue can start to get sorted out by BTW :)

Out of curiosity, who will foot the BT call out fee (if any) in this case?

Will fast.co.uk pay or will the O.P?

Id like to warn the O.P in advance if his connection is a solid 5Mb and not disconnecting, then a standard engineer will likely deem there is no fault visiting his home and they may potentially face a £100+ bill for the privilege. Unless fast.co.uk have agreed to take care of things like that.

I will say though to be fair and balance this out......

Although there is something wrong, its still unclear if it is the fault of fast.co.uk, BT or the poster. More information and testing would be needed before i or anyone can reach a fair conclusion on here in that regard.

Hi,

I won't go into the OP's case in public, but eitherway the terms of the visit on offer (ie when he/she would have to pay) have been made very clear and very fair to the OP! :)

Mark

I take it that means they will have to foot the bill :( May in that case given the prior performance of the line (3 times better) be quicker and cheaper for them to just migrate. Disappointing :(

I Doubt a BT engineer will find anything wrong, unless their internal cabling has suddenly rotted away. Far more likely something to do with how the service has been provisioned on his line, capacity issues or something else which no basic BT engineer will find (as they will only do basic line checks, quiet line tests, etc) and would likely need a SFI visit, who will still find nothing wrong if its nothing wrong BT end.

Either way wish the OP best of luck and hope you both reach an understanding.

I take it that means they will have to foot the bill :(

As I've said before our customer is very aware of when he would have to pay, and when we will foot the bill. This is an offer that I won't make public but is aimed at getting the matter moving forward beyond this stumbling block.
