Hi all,

I thought i'd try here before going to EE. I having recently got an EE sim to take advantage of they 4g.

On my MiFi device I get 4 bars of signal on EE EE reads at 800+ms ping yet downloads at 18mbps

yet on three which gets less signal (3 bars) get 60ms ping and 8mbps download.

I wanted to move to 4G as i heard they had better ping, but in this instance it doesn't seem the case. The masts seem to be around the same distance from my house.

Anyone off any advice ?

Do a tracert on both sims to something like BBC and post it.

Hmm 800ms on 4G is very unusual, that's the sort of time I'd expect from some Satellite links. As Lee suggests, a traceroute should reveal where the latency is being lost.

As for the raw speed difference, well that could equally be down to issues like local network/node congestion, the spectrum band being used (this can impact capacity) and the time of day when the test is conducted (peak vs offpeak etc.). Speed on mobile networks can fluctuate wildly and for all sorts of reasons.

In one of my tests in Guildford I got a ping of 500ms and a throughput of 1mbps down and 30 up over 4G for 3. EE tends to be around 100ms according to friends, so really low pings are not always attained! 3 Seems to be beyond manic congested, but also the 3 4G seems very much a trial. I'll do a tracert when I'm in town.

Normally around 12ms to 35ms here.

Still yet to do any tracert hoping to do it this week. I will get back to you

I think I might have seen something similar to you.

"Normal" is about 20 to 30ms

"Good" is below 20ms

That's a 4 bar signal (or what the modem we have calls 4 bars).

However I just had to top up the credit on the SIM card and for a while I was seeing ping times of 800ms despite the fact that the actual performance down and up was normal.

Rebooting the router and the modem sorted it. I can only assume something was "bouncing around the internal network" e.g. the problem was here, not with the provider (we have a separate router on the "inside" and a B593 modem-router acting as a modem only, and a VPN set up in the router).

I tried several speed test servers since I thought the problem may lie there, but they were all struggling to complete the ping test.

The signal strength you're seeing, would seem to rule out e.g. scatter, reflection, poor signal, very distant cell etc.

Have you tried switching it off and on again ;)

It seems that you were right DT Mark. I've finally gotten round to testing the sim card again. Below are the results:
