Home Telephone Providers

Hi,
Can anyone tell me if there are any other telephone service providers apart from BT ? Which provide a complete service and not just a code number to ring first.I know World On Line used to but have since stopped.
Thanks !!!

have you tried gettin telewest? ntl?

or why not use one of those box things that go inbetween your phone and box and dial the prefix for you?

Ukbell have launched a new Telephone service called Telecom gold. This service uses the new Carrier Select service. This means u still pay BT for line rental but all your calls will be billed by uk bell. UK bell also benefits from local call savings
with a minimum call charge of 2p
you also get savings on local calls.
Eg a 5 min daytime call costing just 7p compared to 18p on BT
Also if u reccomend a friend(PYRAMID SCHEME?) then u get to call them for free too!
For more information call 01413320322
Please note that I have nothing to do with this company. UKbell are part of EcosseTel.

Try Servista. I am currently with them and have no BT link, but the line is a BT line. However although the reason I changed to them when Freechariot stopped doing telco stuff was that I hate the BT monopolistic concept and the way they abuse this position, I have to shamefacedly report that I am about to rejoin BT after six or so years as I can't resist their £18.50 a month deal for inclusive off peak calls. I'll still use IMS Telecom for my peak calls though!

You hate BT and the monopoly they have but you are going to be their customer! That makes sense.

Bottom line is though, unless your getting a tripleplay from NTL or Telewest, you don't get a better deal for your telephony than direct from BT. Time after time I've nearly left them, until reading the small print on another telco's ads - what a con they usually are.

Hi Dave,
Yes I hate the monopoly abuse and yet I am about to become a customer!
Its a battle between principles. The economic principle won. I have my price on principles - like so many other things in life.

Cable and Wireless will provide business telephone connection (minimum one ISDN line) - independent company..... but they use BT as their wiring contactor! so it all goes on BT cables anyway...

If you used a BT ISDN line and put a least-cost router in at the ISDN level, you could use a third-party call provider and you wouldn't notice the delay in call set-up (have to pay for the router tho......)

useless information I know! wait for local loop unbundling!

Depending on your age, I received info a few days ago that `Saga` have now launched a new telephone service without the need to dial access codes or use boxes.

Onetel can also provide you with a `Phone Pal` dial up box free. 1p per min off peak.

Eric, the Saga offer uses CPS so you still need to pay BT or a Call & Access providor for line rental.

BIGT

You are not entirely correct.

We will see wholesale rental of lines from B.T. soon. This will mean you pay someone else for your line rental, or may not pay line rental at all, depending on the packages available.

This will all happen soon, hopefully sooner than later.

Regards
RW

I find absolutely no problems with my BT telephony service.

Their Talk Together packages, were the biggest step forward possible.

The BT line is used for incoming calls & access to the net 4 the kids....

Why pay more with BT for LESS of a service.....

Doesn't look like all UK landlines to me :)

Can I get telewest? Well no.

OK.

Maybe not ALL landlines...

But neither are BTs options.....

The TW to mobile rates are cheaper than BTs, the premium numbers are the SAME as BTs (and I EXPLICITLY said UK landlines)!

Simply showing what a rip-off BT is!!!!

After reading these replies I decided to e-mail UKbell requesting details etc of their UK residential service.
What did I receive back - absolutely nothing - zilch. Hopeless characters, there web site is useless, just tells you to contact customer services. Well they dont reply.
I will stick with BT then.

I tried `onetel` earlier and it was not until I had my first bill in, did I realise I got clobbered a 3p connection charge for each call on top of the call charges. They list a call charge of 2.5p per min but their customer service told me they round this up to 3p (so 3p + 3p = 6p)
Dearer than BT.
