Honest - SMART eSIM is here!

interesting, but only Google maps?
Google drive, photos, docs, sheets work for viewing files. Google earth and I think Google wallet would work too. Youtube and Youtube music work but some thumbnails don't load, I have watched 4K videos on it before.
Firsty has been good for me. I don't bother with the ads and slow data much but their daily rate for 500MB of data is generaly about £1 and can be bought for as many days as you need in one go. I think thats pretty reasonable for a decent amount of daily data
I prefer BNESIM with a referral code for that as they do 3GB PAYG for 84p which doesn't expire, or 5GB/month also for 84p. You can use multiple refferal codes on the same account.

Can you explain the bnesim 5GB for 84p thing so an idiot like me can understand it?

If you go to their wesbite: https://my.bnesim.com/pricing_ext.p...&target_price=30&customer_direction=departure

Go to Europe and then click "one-time" to see the 30 day plans. Then you can use code "6FXB06SV" to get the discount. You would have to use a differant referral code every month to keep it at that price, which is easy enough to find.

can you buy and keep or does it start counting on the day you buy it?
Pretty sure it would start when you buy it. You can get the 3GB PAYG that doesn't expire.

Why’s Three missing? 👀

Can't upset business daddy.

Can’t help think you’re right… I wonder if Gamma have told them not to compete with Three.

Three are technically cheaper than Honest by £54 over 24m because the first 6m are half price but they don’t have inclusive roaming, have a 24m minimum terms and 2 CPI price increases in that period.

Feels like a missed opportunity by Honest.

I think it's a bizzare feature that's been massively over-inflated by Honest. It's essentially a third party SIM that's using the most horrendously slow server (Amazon Web and is not designed to be an ISP, the ping is like 450ms and speed below 20Mbps) with a firewall blocking access to anything but 3 apps and 2 banks 50% won't have, that's an Honest restriction and they forgot to apply it until 24 hours ago, now general web doesn't work anymore but glad I got to test it unrestricted before they realised.

Vodafone currently doesn't work, O2; EE and Three do, despite using 5G it obviously is bottlenecked by the proxy they're using and the fact they're drip feeding whitelisted websites, I don't think it's anything to do with their commercial agreement as the networks, just a strange marketing strategy. Plus because they've made it unlimited they probably don't want people draining data through roaming networks which can be expensive although the speed of it would put off people from streaming or downloading regardless. EE where I live has maximum speeds of 700Mbps on 5G, the server they're proxying through them is around 5Mbps lol but I guess it is an 'emergency' SIM, just don't get the extremely tight list of apps. They'd have been better off setting profiles for different apps and traffic shaping, but it took them 3 years just to set this version up.

I don't actually have my honest SIM at the moment, a friend was using it in turkey. He's not said anything on the matter though.
Ah okay, I expect it's the same everywhere. You can have the strongest connection to a mast with full 5G and still only get 5Mbps if the core network is pants which seems to be the case with Honest, I wonder if they use Gamma on their main SIM when roaming or if they don't proxy back to the UK.

I would guess gamma provide roaming on their mains Sims. Would be silly for them not to.

Yeah they definitely offer roaming but the problem is networks used to use the roaming network for calls, texts and data whereas now especially for data they proxy the connection back to the home network, so if you're in France you'll still have a UK IP address which can be a benefit in terms of watching iPlayer and stuff, but it also means higher latency for the user and a lesser quality connection than previously, the other advantage is direct billing and caps whereas the previous system would result in unexpected bills and charges, so I guess they've had to weigh up the ability to real time manage customers versus full roaming for pay monthly customers. What the Smart SIM is doing is using a custom core network rather than the native networks' infrastructure which costs more I think, so even if they eventually add apps like Netflix and YouTube, it would be extremely unsuitable which tells me they're not planning on introducing anything beyond basic messaging apps and essentials... the whole point you might say but abroad you can already roam across (most) networks using Honest's main product, I thought the main selling point of Smart SIM was to use all networks in the UK for your data, so if you're in a situation where you can't use Three then you might get an excellent EE 5G connection, if that's not the USP then I can't see the point lol it should be attached to your main data allowance and provide the ability to roam on other UK networks where Three can't deliver. Even if they charged me £10 extra per month to use my data normally across the networks I'd happily pay that.

Honest have added more apps to their Smart SIM

WhatsApp, Signal, WeChat, Google Translate, Apple Translate, Google Maps, Apple Maps, Waze, what3words, Nationwide, Starling, Monzo, Revolut, Amex, HSBC, Tesla, Trainline, Skyscanner, Virgin Atlantic, Easyjet, Ryanair, Uber, PayByPhone, Ringo, LNER, TfL Go and Lime.

I would recommend people who have it fill in the form to request more apps, I have asked for quite a few EV charging Apps…

But I like the idea of the smart sim, but not sure about the implementation, as surely if something talks over HTTPS or ports 8080 or 443 then you should be able to web browse unless they are IP whitelisting on the Proxy
