Honest - SMART eSIM is here!

As an Enterprise company the MNO's push you down the private APN route, rather than use there own core network, and thus the enterprise customers own network deals with all traffic and any filtering and routing of the traffic, I know we have looked into it a few times, but the cost vs benefit argument is sometimes hard to overcome..

It also sounds like something Luminet offer via there sims and service provided to enterprise customers

But agree the service is far from user friendly and think I am going to cancel as it seems a bit too much of a faff, and you might as well just get a cheap esim from an MVNO and rely on wifi where possible...

They did used to have a services, as I tried it when they launched and it worked relatively well...
Also don't understand why they didnt use AWS in the UK region, or have region specific AWS servers in the same buckets... or use Route 53 across multiple regions... it just smacks of a poorly thought out design...

I can imagine it would have been insanely expensive to have calls, texts and data routes through them across all networks for free, if they sold their plans with this unique ability factored in and released it they could've saved 2 years of pointless marketing and been the only network that offers a traditional service with boundriless signal. Now that's a USP.

Smart SIM is spaghetti workings slapped on an AWS in America. To be honest.. they should've charged £10 a month and allow standard access to the Web, nothing for gaming or hard-core streaming but enough to watch YouTube videos and check emails.

I think what's either happening here is they're paying by the pound for server usage and need to keep the consumption low by limiting to barebone apps or they're playing a really annoying marketing game and could quite easily allow unrestricted browsing on an unlimited AWS agreement.

I did eventually get it working on other networks (the toolkit appeared after a reboot) but the use case for me is quite limited, so I have cancelled. I am on SMARTY and TBH rarely go anywhere in UK where I don't get signal. Spending $5 with Roamless got me 2GB for any use on Vodafone/O2 which is better value. For foreign travel I have used Airalo who seem better value than Roamless and I have been pleased with their coverage.

I can't see that an average consumer will understand the current Smart SIM offering, many struggle with basic technology and this "it only works for certain apps" will be too complicated. I don't mean to patronise, but it is my experience of family and friends.

Which network did they lose?

So i have installed on a S24 Ultra. Does it have to be switched to Sparkle ?
Why dont the others work ?
Thanks
I did when I had mine but I cancelled because it was a little pointless me paying for a SIM that’s so restrictive.

Well I've been offered one and paid the fiver to see what it is was like and it's a complete clunkfest, settings didn't bother me but the SIM is so flaky and restricted, and slow - I posted a review and Honest flagged me and threatened to remove it for being a non-genuine review - so they've requested my details and I'll quite happily tell them my feelings on it!

I tried Smartsim last month. It did work everywhere I tried including Cuba which is insanely expensive for roaming. The use case is so niche though its really not worth the money. When I first started using it vpn was possible which unlocked being able to use unrestricted but only at about 1Mbps. That loophole was quickly closed.

These people are basically sharks, selling a system hacked together and held together by pieces of string.

No wonder Vodafone (I assume) told them to shove it.

I mean... For a fiver

Can you really go wrong?

Bit rich coming from the people who charge £6 a day in most countries, £5 for the entire month with roaming (albeit restricted) works out way better.

Their roaming agreements are done with Telecom Italia, so if anything the discrepancy was between TIM IT and VF UK.

Intesting concept. 2 questions.
1) Do you need to use their app?
2) Can you use it with another network (switching as required?)

I cancelled it after a month, it was way too restrictive... I get the idea and from looking at the proposition I liked it, but in practice when i was in Thailand it was too restrictive for everyday tasks, so i just used a local sim via airolo which worked great and was unlimited!

Fair enough. For me, I’m obsessed. I’ve used over the past 6 weeks over 4 continents and it just works.

Yes it’s not the fastest, and a local sim is always best, but for short trips here and there it’s fantastic.

If I was going somewhere for a few weeks I’d get a local sim so I can also have a number etc, but for what they offer and my use case it’s great.

I’m not getting much use out of it in England though, as I normally have signal, but heavily throttled.

When I have manually switched over to their sim, it’s worked great.

Really comes down to your use case i guess, having being used to open communication, reverted to this filtered experience may work some... not for all for sure.

I have to agree with Pepstar, its usage case is incredibly niche and has one helluva walled garden, half of the apps are for English train/bus services, Uber and WhatsApp and the latter two were chugging so bad when I landed in America and I even didn't need Uber.

So I gave up using it and switched to my Firsty eSIM (which is free, 200MB usage cap per ad and you have to watch ads) but l could use iMessage and FaceTime audio which are my go-to apps for talking to her when she was trying to find me on a very busy and stressful LAX ring-road - and my Facebook Messenger blew up from other friends when I switched over (but neither app is supported by Honest) if they want this product to work you need to support bigger apps like this, let alone airline apps which don't exactly suck data!

When companies like Airalo, BNEsim or Nomad have very good products for a couple of pounds more and everything works - I can't see Honest's "beta" product taking off and it feels very beta.
