How long does it take for the router to arrive?

Mel

I ordered Sky BB last night and the order already shows as in progress on BT's site. It is not due till next month, but the BT engineers don't mess about at my exchange, my last IPStream activation was done at least a week before the due date, so I'm a little worried that my line could be LLUed before I get the router.

It's annoying that they don't provide the login details so you can use your own router - I obviously wouldn't expect any support.

Sky have changed their policy with regards the issuing of routers since I joined. They now only send the routers out once the line has gone live.

Oh crap, that won't be until after the official completion date next month, even if the line was switched over today or tomorow, cutting me off from AOL!

I could understand that if I didn't already have ADSL on the line, meaning that the ability of the line to support ADSL was uncertain

Sorry to hijack Mel, but how easy was it to connect to Sky? Im moving to them from UKonline LLU who say I have to disconnect my current service, then sign up to Sky Max. No standardised MAC code structure for LLU services yet. Did you have any troubles with BT? I've read on the net that Sky claim that BT blocks/hinders people wishing to move to Sky Broadband for one reason or another...

I phoned Sky today to discuss my moving to their broadband, which led me through an automated system which took my home phone number then cut me off, presunably for somebody to phone me back.

Nobody has been in contact with me since this afternoon... :(

That's ok, hijack away :D

Sky of course own Easynet who in turn own Ukonline, so it is crazy that migrating between the two of them is so difficult

I registered on mysky http://www.sky.com/portal/site/skycom/mysky and ordered online, so I could type in my MAC code myself as I've read horror stories about orders for sky getting stuck in their system because someone has got the MAC code wrong.

Haven't got my router yet, fortunately I haven't been unbundled yet either:)

I've been running a script on my router for the past few days to monitor my ds margin as I noticed it was less stable than normal, unfortunately AOL's SMTP server has been blocking the email from the router as spam until today.

It looks like my DS SNR is plummeting overnight, the lowest was 13dB at about 3:30 am. so I guess the speeds once I'm on Sky ain't going to be that impressive :crap:

Does you existing router not have auto detect?

I recently bought a Zoom X6 to prove a connection problem was not at my end, and it detects and sets up the connection by itself. all I needed to do was enter my user name and password.
If you are that eager to get on-line it is £40 well spent on a wireless ADSL1/2/2+ router. (from pissy weirld)

Does you existing router not have auto detect?

Yes, it's a Netgear DG834G, it has a wizard to auto configure itself, it is also a doddle to configure manually.

I'm expecting a "sky broadband box" which is actually a Netgear DG834GT router with (allegedly crap) customised Sky firmware and my Sky password and username hard coded into it, so until I get the Sky router I won't be able to find out the username/password, which is why I've got my fingers crossed that I recieve it before my adsl connection is unbundled.

Mel doesn't know the u/n or p/w yet - Sky won' tell you these.

The username is made up using the WAN side MAC (Media Access Code) address of the router i.e. mac_address@skydsl and the password appears to be some random alpha/numberical jobbie.

NASTY!!!

Why would an ISP not want to tell you your log in details???

I would worry about only being able to use proprietary hardware to connect; if it fails you are stuck waiting for SKY to send another one.

No idea, perhaps they figure customers would use their own router and expect Sky to support it.

Fortunately Netgear routers, including the Sky one contain a vulnerability which means you can obtain the authentication details if you have the router admin password :)

Although with my luck, I'll probably get some updated firmware or something so the one I get won't be vulnerable  Nah, more likely they'll send me one with the wrong username or something like that

Added the time to my graph, the SNR starts dropping off from about 9pm till about 5:30am. So I guess it is probably the street lighting. It never used to drop off that much though

With sky is it likely to affect my maximum speed if the router regularly loses sync /resyncs overnight? I'm wondering if I should use a timeswitch.

I thought I'd try my new router out to make sure it works :) so I'm currently connected using the Sky router - still on AOL though.

The DS attenuation looked rather good (only 15db which was obviously wrong) until I got a PPP connection working.

My attenuation has more than halved again, I guess the Sky firmware is a bit on the buggy side. My dg834g gives 43-44db and I think an old safecom used to claim ~51dB, so 47dB is probably about right.

goodbye AOL

My line was switched to Sky a little while ago. I'm currently syncing at 7328kbps, pings aren't so immpressive as AOL though - about 38ms slower, I guess that's interleave for you :(.

This is what happens when an openreach engineer is messing with the local phonelines

If I'd been on a BT max service, then I guess that would have stuffed my profile :D as it was I was getting thousands of CRC errors and a very sluggish connection all evening until I rebooted the router. I've also had to force the sync speed a bit lower :(

Apparently he was redoing all the connections that were repaired last year and he did the same in an old junction box that the last engineer (who happened to know my dad) said was best left alone after he dropped it back in the water filled pit - I don't think he wanted to open it as it might make it leak.
