How long to TalkTalk take to 'plan'?

My exchange has been sitting at:

Unplanned
This exchange has been targeted for unbundling, however, there are no dates set for this to start.

It's been like this for a few months now.

I know Mark.J has some contacts at TalkTalk and he offered to try and extract some information out of them.

I'd just quite like to know when I can expect to be able to jump onto the ADSL2+ bandwagon.

Regards,

Ben

What's your exchange?

I couldn't get a specific date for you but at the current rate you should be covered within the next 12 - 18 months at the latest. Sorry that's not much help but TalkTalk's internal plan isn't being released, so you could be covered next week or next year :) .

Thanks a lot Mark, really appreciate it.

I understand it's cooperate sensitive data and so releasing it to the public will just give their competitors the heads up.

12-18 Months isn't dreadful I guess, the sooner the better though

You may even have FTTC by then ;)

Matt

What, where I live?

I'll probably be dead by the time Fibre is installed here.

Anyhow, not to worry - the exchange next to mine is getting FTTC (1/12/2011) so I'll just stick up signs everywhere saying "Give us fibre too and I'll give you a cookie." - that ought to work.

It's slightly frustrating when companies like Virgin are trialling 300Mb broadband and there are places without 2Mb. I think the country needs to get EVERYONE to a certain speed before advancing further.

Actually on the subject of FTTC, does the 'second cabinet' for the fibre have to be next to the current cabinet? My village is actually outside the exchange's village but our street cabinet is a good 900-1200 metres from the actual village - now installing fibre to that cabinet is just a waste of time surely since we'll get getting 5-6Mb from it due to the rate VDSL drops away. Would BT put a second cabinet in the village and connect that to the old cabinet with fibre or would they just leave the cabinet completely?

Definitely, if BT sees that they can get a free cookie out of upgrading your exchange to support FTTC then they're bound to do it :) .

Hi,
I am on the same exchange as you but but live within 150 metres of the exchange. I've just asked for a MAC from TalkTalkBusiness as my evening speeds suddenly dropped about 2 weeks back and currently average about 0.6.
Just wondered what kind of speeds you're getting? My mother lives up in Heddon and I know that her neighbours were saying that it was not worth having Broadband as the speeds were so low.
Do you think that TalkTalk would invest in an exchange with so few subscribers?

Firstly I'm shocked to see someone from the same area as me since it's so small.

I presume you're in Wylam then.

I'm usually sync at about ~6000Kb/s to the exchange and get 5.5Mb download consistently however I've got a DGN2000 which is keeping sync at an SNR of 3.5dB so I'm syncing at 8128 right now.

I'm with an excellent ISP:

http://www.xilo.net/adsl_broadband/

(You'll only be able to get the Home and Office packages)

I know some people from Heddon that had two lines when they moved in, one of them gave them a sync of 300Kb (Yea, stupidly slow) and another 3000Kb.

The quicker one must have been an extra line for some reason, but BT soon closed it. I think I might be able to reclaim that speed by running through the test socket.

Your family might well be able to get a little extra sync speed too.

Heddon is easily capable of 2-3Mb I reckon.

In terms of TalkTalk not bothering due to size? I don't see why not, Stocksfield exchange which is pretty much exactly the same size as Wylam has got TalkTalk LLU.

Yes I'm in Wylam, right in the bustling centre  and normally sync at 8128.
I can get 6300 download in the mornings but in the evening it's started dropping to 0.4.
The lowest speed I got was 0.1 a couple of weeks back. When I ran www.speedtester.bt.net it said there was a fault and I noticed that the profile had dropped. Since then the connection rate has returned but the actual speed has remained the same. As I'm with TalkTalk I think it's probably just as easy to change provider as try and deal with their support.
I've read a lot of good things about Xilo and was looking at them, Vivaciti, Zen or A&A.
A consistent 5.5mb sounds brilliant especially at a distance from the exchange even at it's best, my speed has always dropped to about 2 - 3 mb in the evenings.
When I try my mothers telephone number in the BT checker it gives a maximum expected speed of 1.0mb - although I've read that they underestimate.

I didn't realise that Stocksfield exchange had been unbundled - maybe they have more millionaires :-)

This is what I currently get from my Draytek 2820

Yeah, you should be getting 6.5Mb+ at all times with a decent ISP.

I really can wholeheartedly recommend XILO.

I can drop them an email or a post on their forums and generally get a response within minutes, I've had responses within 4 minutes at 11PM on a Sunday night before. They're all mad.

Sure, they're a little more expensive than most but you do get the service that comes with it.

Sadly TalkTalk aren't really well known for their quick speeds and customers often find their speeds crashing to dial-up speeds.

I'm on their Home 50GB package but was considering the Office 40GB.

Home 50GB gives you 50GB a month to use between 8AM - 12AM (Midnight), 200GB out of those hours.

Office 40GB gives you 40GB a month to use between 8AM - 8PM, 200GB out of those hours.

Like you say they are a little bit more pricey. But better to pay a little more and get what you pay for plus decent customer service, than to pay slightly less and get something that doesn't work the way it should, plus customer service that takes 6 days to respond to emails.
I'm looking at the Office 15gb - as I'm not normally at home through the day but the office products have faster upload speeds than the home ones - currently I consistently get about 0.6 upload speed.
See when/if my Mac code appears. I requested it by email from a page that said I should receive it within 5 days - but as it seems to take them that long to respond to emails, who knows.
Thanks very much for the information. The Xilo website says free night time usage but I couldn't see that it says when night time starts and ends, so you've saved me a question :)

No problem mate.

XILO actually have a rep on this forum called 'Unobroadband'.

If you visit your family in Heddon any time soon you might want to investigate the 'BT Test Socket' trick.

I got an extra 3Mb out of my connection with it.

I know that my line connection doesn't have a test socket. It dates from the 1970's I think. My mother's telephone connection is the same.
Come to think of it her's probably still has a bell wire coupled up and I know that removing that can increase speed.

Hi,
I now also have Xilo as my ISP since this morning - so far seems like an excellent recommendation.
Thanks.

No problem. You see, they've even welcomed you from a third party forum in under 2 minutes of you posting saying you've joined.

Pretty much sums them up really

I hope you're time with them will be as great as mine has been.
