how to find out the last/previous telephone and broadband provider?

hi,

i've just moved into a new property property and in the process of placing an order for a new phone line and broadband, my house has already got a BT socket, i just tried to place an order for the BE broadband and phone line but i got a message that line already exist, what does that mean?

BT said an engineer needs to send out to activate the line and they will charge £30 on 18 month contract.

also is it possible at all without consulting landlord to find out the last/previous telephone and broadband provider?

thanks

If it's a BT socket then they'll probably know or your intended ISP might be able to help.

I'm a little confused as to why BE is telling you that the line already exists, while BT is saying that they need to activate it. Did BE's message mention anything about there being a "tag" on the line, or anything more descriptive of the situation than what you have posted?

A good thing to do would be to call BE and explain your situation as their tech support might be able to help out better than the checker system. It's also possible that the database on BE's system might not have been updated with the latest line status.

Hi,

If you would like, PM me your telephone number, and I will run it through a checker and let you know what's on it (if anything)?
If you dial 17070 from the handset, this should tell you what number it is.

musicmaker i've pm you my number,

i've just spoken to BE and they said there is already a line at my property, so they cant even install a new BE line, they need a BT line to provide me the broadband, now BT says there is no line but they can provide me the line on 3rd May ( i cant wait that long). BE also suggested that if i get a home line from Post office then they can switch to BE broadband and BE line, but post office is charging 112 and no contract and they can install the line on 17april.

FYI I placed the order for TalkTalk broadband and line which is due to activated on this 11 april but now i've heard horrible stories about talk talk and because of their massive 24month contract i dont want to go with them.... i dont know what to do..

if i already have a BT socket installed at my property why cant BT just activate it from exchange a bit quicker? i am still willing to pay the installation charge

please advise.

When unusual problems like this crop up I usually pick an ISP like Zen with 1 month contracts (you can easily move later on) for the phone and broadband because they're likely to have a better understanding of what's really happening on your line. Even if you don't pick them it's still a good idea to call up and ask for their opinion. AAISP is another one that might be better positioned to help, although their packages are quite complex to understand.

zen is not available in my area, my exchange is upton park london.
my BT line will be activated on 27 then hopefully i'll be able to place BE broadband.
i'll cancel my TT broadband.
does anyone knows the customer service email address for TT business broadband?

Also there are many ISP's offering line rental, look at Ispreview's Top10 list and pick away, ICUK do it for £10, IDNET is another good choice.

C&W resellers are usually the best choice for broadband, no FUP and great performance/service...ICUK, Xilo etc.

That's very odd. Zen is not an LLU ISP, they are BT based and should thus be available to anywhere that BT itself can go. I suggest you give any ISPs you're interested in a call and explain your situation as their online ordering/checking processes are too linear to cope with your situation.
