Huawei B818-260: ISP branded firmware hides and disables bridge mode!

I came upon a thread here with some knowledgeable people discussing the B818-263, and I was hoping someone here might have a solution to this problem as well.

I run an internet-facing server for multiple purposes. Recently, I moved into a house where 4G broadband is the only option at this time. The last owner kindly left his modem/router for me. I assumed it'd be simple enough to put it in bridge mode and use my own router. Not so!

I looked everywhere in the web UI and found nothing. Decided to contact my ISP (Telenor), and their advice was to buy a new modem. This seems like a waste of money when bridge mode is only made unavailable at the firmware level. So I found a website where I could (cheaply) buy a more recent and unbranded firmware version - 10.0.3.2(H190SP1C00) vs. the branded 8.0.1.1(H160SP2C517) that I currently have.

Unfortunately, attempting to install this firmware via the web GUI just gives me "Update failed" after a while, and no further explanation anywhere. I tried asking the people that sold me the firmware, but they just asked if I wanted a different version (don't think they understood what I meant).

In the other thread I happened upon, people were talking about unhiding hidden settings using Javascript. I was thinking this may be a solution. If someone can give me some pointers there, that'd be awesome. Even if it's just a css selector for the appropriate element(s), I can give it a shot.

Otherwise, I'm interested in advice on how to successfully change the firmware, and ideally thoughts on which version I should get. It's all but impossible to find any info online on what separates the different firmware versions...

Thanks for reading!

Google B525 firmware upgrade, there are details on french and polish sites. It involves opening up the router, shorting 2 connections whilst the router is booting so it goes into update mode. Then you connect it to a PC with Huawei software, correct USB driver and the firmware. Then hope its the same for the B818.

I’m trying to find a download link for the firmware 10.0.3.2(H190SP1C00), as I picked up a 818-263 today. Anyone got a working link?

Depends on which Mobile operator the firmware was written for as the operator decides if they want to cover support or not. Most leave it off to keep training costs of support staff lower.

Unlocking and using bridge mode on the Huawei B818-260 may not address the issue - if it is (sorry, making an assumption) related to using your 'internet-facing server for multiple purposes'. Does Telenor use CgNAT? Many providers do on mobile networks and this poses specific challenges using and accessing servers. Some providers do not use CgNAT for some of their services - for example, Three in the UK use CgNat for their mobile phone sims but do not do this for their mobile data only sims (sometimes switching APN can also help address this issue).

Currently using (among others) a Huawei B818-263 (originally DNA badged - Finland?) - Software version 10.0.2.2(H190SP4C9831) - bridge mode, band-locking etc. all available. Servers all worked fine on this using a Three Data sim (and a ddns) - but most struggled/failed with EE data or phone sims.

Might be worthwhile exploring what Telenor actually uses (or alternatives available) and whether the expense of a 'new router' or 'new firmware' will fix the specific issue. Depending on your server purposes other workarounds might also be possible. I'd explore with other Telenor users how they manage/get around server issues - it looks like Telenor use very locked down routers - so other routers might work better and best people to know would be other local Telenor users?

If your ISP stops you from running your own server then an L2TP service could give you a fixed IPv4 address as well as IPv6 (if your router supports L2TP - the B818 does - unless Teleneor have also hidden this in the menu).

On the javascript specific question - I don't know of a specific script to 'unhide' the bridge mode option in the B818-260, but read sometime ago on another forum relating to bridge mode on a Huawei CPE Pro that thebridge mode menu was hidden until 'IPV4 only' was selected in the APN - the router was shipped with 'IPV6 only' specified and when this was changed to IPV4 then the bridge mode menu became available. Sorry but not the B818 and since each provider hides their menus in different ways, then this may well not apply to the B818 (but the script to use is there to try on threads in this forum ands elsewhere).

Good luck.
