After a reset it connect to 5g (for approx 2 min) but then loses the 5g connection and selects 4g. 5g signal is still good in optimize position in settings mobile network searching is locked to Auto can"t set to manual . anybody else have have the same problem? i think i want to change my router for one i can control any recommendations thanks in advance

Hi Sonic, a warm welcome along to the forums.

I think there are mainly 2 popular 5G routers in use with a few of our members.

The ZTE MC801A and the Zyxel NR5103E

They are both unlocked so any network SIM should work just fine in them.

If you haven't already spotted the lengthy threads here they are.....

Zyxel NR5103E

ZTE MC801A

You should hopefully get an idea of the good and bad points of both routers from the posts in both threads.

I have used both routers and they worked well for me.

I now use the Zyxel NR5103E as I prefer how it looks.
(Stupid reason I know)

The biggest drawback I can recall for the ZTE was that the external antenna sockets broke off the circuit board really easy which didn't affect me as I dont use an external antenna, but certainly something to be wary of.

Also there are a few posts saying three have disabled the external antenna sockets in a firmware update, but I'm not sure, you'd need to check through the thread for info about that.

The Zyxel NR5103E has a handy in built band locking feature which is nice to have.

There also was a faulty batch of Zyxel NR5103E's too a while back that wouldn't receive a 5G signal, and unfortunately there was no way to know without asking the seller to try a 5G SIM in it before purchasing. (Not ideal)

Anyway, I hope you can have a wee lookie through those threads and see what you think, and hopefully some other users will also chip in with their thoughts here too regarding other routers to try and help you out with your decisions.

Both routers I mentioned above are usually readily available on ebay or CEX for reasonable prices.

Happy reading. 😁

Thanks for the swift reply I had read some of your previous posts and just wanted to check that the Zyxel was still your recommended router thanks

Oh don't take my word for it Sonic, but I've had them for a good while now and they are all working great, bar having no 5G, but that's not the routers fault. 😊

It might be worth mentioning that there are two flavours of the ZTE MC801A currently in use by the forum members. They each have custom firmware, one by Three UK, the other by German T-Mobile. Three have issued firmware updates that have limited the secret debug menus that formerly allowed cell locking. I *think* there is a workaround with a script that still enables band locking. The T-Mobile version which I have had a firmware update recently; the debug menus and custom scripts still work and I currently lock mine to a specific mast's cell ID. I agree with @The Wee Bear about the flimsy antenna sockets, which fortunately I don't need.
Before changing your router though, have you tried either of the two PC based utilities that allow band locking for your Huawei device? They are "LTE Inspecteur" and "LTEH Monitor".

What problems are you having with the 112-370?, they are normally pretty bullet proof Devices.

What make and model of external antenna are you using.

Hi Evanz, no they don't unfortunately, just band locking.
Thanks Wee Bear, I’ve just bought a ZTE MC888, and I was dithering between it and the Zyxel, but I wasn’t sure if it had cell locking. Looks like I went the right way, cell locking is a real boon in my location.

Ah good stuff Evanz, best of luck. (y)

Bugger does have issues though - intermittently loses connection for about 30 seconds, about 3 to 4 times a day.
Oh that's not so handy.:(

Hi Sonic,

as EssexBoy mentioned these Huawei CPE boxes are really very good still though they lack the ability to lock onto the newer 5G bands because they support just n78... Have been using mine for 5G main home internet for the last 2 years and it is pretty rock solid (I use a Smarty / Three unlimited SIM).

I do also have a (German T-Mobile) ZTE MC801A but for me it does not perform as well as the Huawei for speed and stability so I would not give up on it yet.

What you are probably seeing is it selecting a mast which is closer / stronger but which is not carrying the 5G ENDC bearer signal. I had this problem with a very old but nearer Band 3 only mast that kicked me off 5G on a slightly further mast so I did some work on a javascript utility that allows you to restrict the bands:
https://github.com/gazzasat/huawei-cpe

Filtering out the B3 but allowing B1+B28+B32 in the 4G options has nailed it firmly to the right mast and all is good.

If you can pin down what bands you are using when it does connect to 5G then hopefully the utility will give you some control to find the best combo

Hi guys my antenna is a simplytech IPT dual panel the signal in app says 100% 4g is 100 and 5g is about 80. when it selects 5g speed is 260 +Mbps but it doesn't stay locked onto 5g it seem to revert back to 4g, it could be interference as i have a very unique set of circumstances my antenna is feet away from a vodafone mast i doubt anyone is closer! I switched to vodafone when they upgraded the mast hoping it would give me great speeds. but it hasn't i'm not even 100% sure which 5g mast i'm connecting too. i've looked on cell mapper but it's not very clear i'm ready to try another router or move mine inside. i'm only a newbie so not sure about the bands and stuff yet so please be patient while
i learn thank's Sonic

Thanks for that I’ll try and do that, just to let you know what I have tried so far to get this far. This is my mobile set up I’ve driven around the local 360degrees in all directions area to see what are the fastest speeds obtainable. and if I can get 5g on the roof 5g flashed on.

Oops it did it twice
Then by putting a piece of aluminium behind it improved the signal so I bought a Antenna which improved it some more. I’ve had connect to 5g but then it selects 4G the stronger signal
