huawei cpe pro problems any recommendations for a better router?

Your router piccy is playing havoc with my OCD though, I'm looking for the soap and a sponge as we speak.😉

i noticed that too it's not that dirty in real life honest i was surprised how it looked
Hmmmm, I'll believe you just this once, hundreds wouldn't. 😊

Oops it did it twice
Then by putting a piece of aluminium behind it improved the signal so I bought a Antenna which improved it some more. I’ve had connect to 5g but then it selects 4G the stronger signal
Whoa..what's that huge antenna on the corner? Are you an operator? 😁

A little dirty at the top on this picture I’ll have to clean it. Unfortunately I only have 22.6 Mbps at the moment

Hi Sonic,

as EssexBoy mentioned these Huawei CPE boxes are really very good still though they lack the ability to lock onto the newer 5G bands because they support just n78... Have been using mine for 5G main home internet for the last 2 years and it is pretty rock solid (I use a Smarty / Three unlimited SIM).

I do also have a (German T-Mobile) ZTE MC801A but for me it does not perform as well as the Huawei for speed and stability so I would not give up on it yet.

What you are probably seeing is it selecting a mast which is closer / stronger but which is not carrying the 5G ENDC bearer signal. I had this problem with a very old but nearer Band 3 only mast that kicked me off 5G on a slightly further mast so I did some work on a javascript utility that allows you to restrict the bands:
https://github.com/gazzasat/huawei-cpe

Filtering out the B3 but allowing B1+B28+B32 in the 4G options has nailed it firmly to the right mast and all is good.

If you can pin down what bands you are using when it does connect to 5G then hopefully the utility will give you some control to find the best combo
this might be beyond my skills i'll have a go cheers

Should be pretty straightforward. The intel you need is the mast ID and bands connected in both the good throughput case and the poor case.

You can find those details on the Network Info page of the router admin console if you are quick to catch it on reboot.

There are also a few other Huawei config apps you can try but they would not work for me as my ex-Three router had the API disabled.

Good luck!

I hope this is facing North or that thing will bake and die.

what is the difference between a Zyxel NR5103E and non E?
Screenshot_20230808_115219_Edge.jpg

The EE version is the non E model and has very dumbed down firmware with no band locking.

Its main login screen can be seen above.:)

thank's that was quick
Zyxel's have a 5G router which has different branding, who's name escapes me for now, is in fact identical to the NR5103E but it's very expensive.

Not that you wanted to know that. 😁

Wish I could remember the brand.

Hi the Zyxel has arrived today from CEX it is supposed to be unlocked but has a 3 sticker on it. Didn’t seem to work on Vodafone sim so I’ll try it on a 3 sim tomorrow. Could CEX have made a mistake? Is it easy to unlock?

APN Settings for Vodafone

If you’re using a Vodafone SIM, enter the following details:

  • APN (for pay monthly SIMs): wap.vodaphone.co.uk
  • APN (for PAYG or VOXI SIMs): pp.vodaphone.co.uk
  • Username (for all SIMs): wap
  • Password (for all SIMs): wap

Did you check it had the correct Vodafone APN entered Sonic?
The router doesn't always get non three APN's entered correctly.

My Lebara settings are above too, PW is slso wap.

Your router won't be locked to three I'm sure.

Top Right Hamburger Menu

Network Settings / Broadband / Cellular APN tab and click on the edit icon on the bottom to edit it, then click ok.

Hope that helps. 🤞
