HUAWEI GIVES UP – ALL SET TO ABANDON THE EUROPEAN MARKET

Single headquarters in Europe going forward, be interesting to see what they develop further with Unisoc.
Beyond the political, a bit of a shame as their hardware is quite good and their smartphones are very capable, especially on the camera side.
I guess we'll still be able to buy their stuff on aliexpress. :)

Agreed. Especially their battery technology.

I'm wearing a Huawei GT2 watch as we speak and I routinely get about 10 days of battery life out of it. How long does the comparative Galaxy or Apple watch last? A day at best?

Same with my Huawei Matepad Pro. I can use it for most of the weekend, leave it on the side during the week and pick it up the next weekend and it still has plenty of battery left.

This whole Huawei thing is just Bollards, Huawei were and still are excellent Mobile Device Innovators, and have been since the 2G days, what peeps forget is go back to the days of Mobile Dongles, PMCIA Data and PC Cards and MiFi Routers to name a few, that were All branded with the likes of O2, Orange, T Mobile, Voda and Three, and what you will find is all these Mobile Tech Devices we're Re Badged Huawei Devices, nobody seemed to worry about it then, and then there's the likes of 4G and 5G early Cell Mast technology Installations, please don't get me started on that one, the stuff thats all being ripped out now.

This whole thing is all about America vs the rest of the World, together with US's Aliance Countries like the UK and EU who don't have the backbone to disagree with the US wishes.

If, and only if, Huawei is a potential Threat (Yea, really) then come up with ways to deal with it, via the likes of Internet Security and Secure Gateways, yes we can do that now it's 2022, After all, China did exactly that when they Banned any form of Google in China a loooong time ago, its just tit for tat from the US and the only losses are the likes of us, the Consumers.

"Update: There are now official clarifications regarding this report. According to Huawei, it will NOT leave the European mobile phone market. However, for effective and more efficient operation, it will move its business to a single headquarters in Europe. After the ban, Huawei now has much less consumer business globally. Thus, it is not relevant for the company to retain multiple HQs in Europe. "

Just incase you hadn't seen the update :)

It's fundamentally about the fact that China and Russia (their governments) are not 'friends' of democracy, and the so-called "west" (Japan and Australia etc. are hardly in the 'West', so I hate that expression) has become too complacent, allowing key sectors and trade to become excessively interdependent on those countries. This has been exposed by the war in Ukraine, and China represents a potentially much bigger threat for the future, especially if they attack Taiwan.

Huawei produced cracking hardware and I opposed the restrictions on the consumer facing (smartphones, google access etc.) side of their business, as well as some of the blocks on passive network kit. But I don't disagree with the decision to remove from core, and the broad notion of keeping kit from Chinese and Russian actors out of critical sectors does make sense.

At least, for the time being, China seems to have more sense and strategy in how they operate than Russia, so conflict is not imminent. But we should never be complacent about how these countries behave. The price of freedom is eternal vigilance (whenever I say that, it reminds me of an old game called Wing Commander II :), where you fought space cats).
