I want to move to a DSL enabled area...

So how can I check for sure (postcode isn`t 100%) that a potential property can get it when said place is empty and doesn`t have an active line/number? Is there any way?

Argghhhhh H.E.L.P. S.O.S. (or should that be S.M.S. in my case, but that`s text messaging  ) etc!!

If you can obtain a telephone number for someone near the aforementioned property, just input it in the number checker on www.adslguide.org.uk

I asked my neighbours for their tel numbers to check availability for them, when I was trying to get adsl and I was considered too far away. Both were okay.

I can`t believe that when people move it`s left to "lady luck" as to whether they get it or not.

Aye and I want to ditch my line and the house attached and get a better one! :)

I bet Her Majesty is bashing out emails full of "ones" on her solid gold laptop at not getting her 10Mb line! ;)

I`m not sure total strangers are going to give out their Tel numbers to someone turning up on their doorstep, even if I explain why to them. Worth a go though I suppose. :)

I could just scour the phone book. ;)

I just can`t understand why BT can`t just check their own system and tell me for sure. They must have records of whether previous occupants have had the service or not.

Ask them whether they have bb first, and if so whether it is through BT or one of the cable co's.

Alternatively, you can always ask them to check their own number rather than giving out to you.

Thanks for that suggestion

That`s probably a much better approach methinks.

Still, it seems pretty crazy to have to use such a low tech, hit & miss method for a telco system!

I just can`t understand why BT can`t just switch the line on long enough for them to test it for DSL. It`s not like there`s going to be anyone in there to use it!

BT eh? You`ve just gotta  at `em!

I can tell you why; it's called Data Protection.

No I just meant use the records to say whether I can or cannot get DSL at that property, not actually tell me info pertaining to those who lived there once.

Actually shouldn`t they have some kind of DSL/line test record for a property anyway?

Good point but at least it would be something more than the "enabled exchange based on the postcode" message. :(

Why can`t they just turn their own line on and test it then? Assuming there is a line of course. :) No remote switch on?

Maestro...
Where are you moving to?
If you are staying within the Cwmbran area you should be fine as it seems that only the brand new houses in Henllys can't get it.
Most of Cwmbran has ntl which to be honest is a lot better than adsl from BT/any other.
cheers

And Henllys is where I live! :D

Moving out of Cwmbran though. Moved from Hollybush the year after CableTel cabled the place (before NTL bought them out). :( They never came up here. None of Henllys has any cable at all!

You`d think they`d come up here and do the place now considering just how many new expensive houses there are up here (more all the time), full of people who work in Cardiff and are fairly loaded etc...
